July 4th 1993 show featuring this late great heavy, haunting Instrumental Skate Rawk trio opening for Neurosis at a San Francisco Mission locale on 24th St that no longer exists since lofts ate it. The band recorded two CDs, and all three members went on to form other groups and play music to this day.

Scenes From A Lee Hazlewood Tribute

Some Velvet Sunday ago I was privy to an evening in San Francisco where many fine local musicians including Tom Heyman, Kelley Stoltz, Chuck Prophet, Jamin Barton and about a dozen others got Hazy (I really cant recall em all}. Anyhow they laid down two sets of classic Lee Hazlewood songs with fantastic arrangements. For some reason, neither the musicians, and their Ron Jeremy-esque leader nor studio gnome / soundman Chris Von Sneidern felt compelled to make an official audio recording of this very special event. I did manage to sneak some grainy cellphone vidz, but sadly this may be the only documentation of this great show, so youll just have to imagine the glorious sounds...

A clip of Ryuichi Sakamotos groundbreaking Japanese electro group lip synching their peculiar brand o j-funk on a syndicated black American t.v show. Watch out for the culture clash and interview with Mr. C shot on a famous LA soundstage in Hollywood. In this historic crossover appearance aired 12/20/1980 they discuss soul, disco and Yukihiro Takahashis love of "punk", and he compares his band to "Kraftwerk". Ol Don seemingly has no idea whats going on.

I uploaded this on Jan 29th in honor of Willie Dixon, on the anniversary of his death back in 1992. From the 1940s until his death, his contributions to blues, and rock & roll are inumerable, and include a catalog of over 500 songs. Notable as songwriter, backing musician, bandleader, arranger, producer, businessman and touring ambassador. Heres a clip of the man in 1981, playing with Arthur Dixon on piano, Johnny Watkins on guitar, Freddy Dixon on bass, Jimmy Tillman on drums, and Sugar Blue on Harmonica.

Shot in London on December 11, 1968 by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, at Mick Jaggers insistence, the expected BBC t.v special was never seen by the public until 1996. This song was the last one recorded by an exhausted crew & performers after 4 in the A.M, and the extras were mostly local kids whod stayed out way past curfew. Look close and you may catch featured cameos from The Who, John & Yoko and a slew of other pop personalities that would hardly be considered "Salt of The Earth". None the less, this great track from the LP Beggars Banquet closed the proposed broadcast, sung by both Mick & Keith. Brian Jones muttered along amiably in a stupor before being fired soon after.

Managed by Malcolm McLaren and comprised of 15 year old Anglo-Burmese singer Annabella Lwin, and some refugees from Adam & The Ants, this UK group were buoyant agent provocateurs of pop in the early 80s. Their perky adaptation of the Burundi beat propels this promo clip from the bands 2nd EMI single, "W.O.R.K. (N.O. Nah, No No My Daddy Dont)" released March 1981. They switched labels shortly afterwards to RCA and went on to have several worldwide hits in the 80s before disbanding.

a quick look at the voice of this famous 60s track 40 years later performing at a recent show in the UK for an enthusiastic crowd of baby boomers.

a wee bit of "sham rock" from my ye olde celtic punk band The Bedlam Rovers, shot on 16mm in 1989. The footage is all done in San Franciscos financial district, much of it from a show on St. Paddys Day. The darker indoor footage and sound was from a gig couple weeks later. It was the first & just about the only time we played this new song called "Wild Eyed". The messenger footage includes band members Caroleen & Andrew, plus many local late 80s SF scenester legends from Quicksilver etc.

line up on this song

Caroleen Beatty - Flute
Andrew Bunn - Drums
Jeremy Bunn - Mandolin
Lil Mike - Vox
Michael Mood - Percussion
Marko Sakmann - Guitar
Greg Snyder - Bass
Cynthia Wigginton - Violin

thanx to the the filmmakers who put this together, and provide the only known documentation of the late 80s era of the band.

These vids from Kal Spelletichs personal collection comprise a mini press kit/ documentary of sorts on the San Francisco based founder of kinetic pyro performance pranksters The Seemen. Beginning with a clip shot in Austin TX from Richard Linklaters cult classic "Slacker", we enter Kals offbeat artistic world. Enjoy some interviews and footage from the late 1990s of Kals SRL inspired interactive fire spewing toys from "Machines for Removing Desires", with Dana King on "CBS Eye to Eye with Connie Chung", and an obscure Russian TV show. You get a glimpse of the man, his machines and bits of the philosophy behind his performances. Footage includes interviews from his Butchertown live/workspace and The Lab on 16th Street in San Francisco.

Author Tom Sancton narrates this intro to the Other Press book "Song for My Fathers A New Orleans Story in Black and White". Set against the segregated backdrop of the 50s & 60s Jim Crow era, the book tells a remarkable story of a white kid in New Orleans learning lifes lessons not only from his eccentric father but from the many old black jazzmen he befriends at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter. Characters like Sweet Emma and George Lewis, and places like Luthjens and Central Lockup come to life as a young clarinetist comes of age. Like a jazz funeral, the tale is poignant and celebratory, capturing the music and characters of an era and a Crescent City that has long been buried and passed into legend. Sancton wrote the book after leaving town to attend both Harvard & Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, becoming Times Paris Bureau Chief for over two decades and abandoning "the mens" and the traditional jazz he loved as a teen. He has since returned to New Orleans as of 2008, holding the title Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Tulane.

This is a brief capture off of Dave Markeys Slog movie DVD, a great document on early 80s LA punkscene. Aside from footage of the Circle Jerks, theres also Black Flag, Circle One, Symbol 6, Wasted Youth, Red Cross, TSOL, The Chiefs, Sin34, Fear, etc. In this clip you get some sort of mystery directors commentary I had no idea was on the disc until I ripped the clip. Its apparently Markey, Keith Morris, Mike Watt and pals reliving the era, and going through the ol where are they now files. Eventually the degrees of separation between Loverboy and the hardcore scene are peeled away. Was Mike Reno actually Keiths inspiration? Is it true that Reno is now 500lbs and known as Blubberboy... who knew? Watch & learn kids...

oh, and buy yer own full length copy of this outrageous and historically juvenile movie at //wegotpowerfilms

better quality video of Borat surprising his SF fans than Ive seen online yet...While there are grainy cell phone vids that have surfaced of Borats brief but hilarious appearance in SF, I thought I might share my somewhat better quality shots from up close...

p.s thanx too all that were therefor putting up with me as MC, I was recruited at the last minute, and it it wasnt my idea to make ya wait for Borat... and as you know, I had no idea how to stall that long!!! But the man & his magic film was well worth it!!

Nice!!

A rare lo-rez clip I crafted of a TSU Tornadoes cover tune by Tim Kerrs late great post punk soul band from their one and only self titled release on In The Red Records. I shot the live footage at San Franciscos Cafe DuNord on a 2001 summer tour stop. Kerr suffered a major skateboarding injury shortly thereafter and they disbanded on the eve of a then cancelled Japanese tour. Edited on some then new home gear, I used every wipe, fade & bit of found footage I could to compensate for the lack of other camera angles, or other expertise. uh, Enjoy.

lineup

Tim Kerr ( Big Boys, Poison 13 )on guitar
Bob Vennum ( BellRays )on bass
Kari Luna ( Gospel Swingers, This Damn Town) on Hammond organ
Steve Adkins ( Blacktop) on drums

The mighty Lisa Kekaula of the BellRays typically sang the songs, but here shes just doing her thing on tambourine.

The original version was put out in 1968 by Houstons funky TSU Tornadoes, who recorded for the Ovide label, and later Atlantic & Stax/Volt. They also backed up Archie Bell & The Drells on his very similar flavored "Tighten Up".

A track from Bone Cootes amazing "Mock Piehole" CD recorded on Capp St, now finally set to a frantic live video I shot just last night at the Elbo Room on Valencia Street in San Franciscos Mission District. The occasion was Davit(Frank Black Sinatra) Evans 40th birthday soiree, and what a grand ole time was had by all...
