The Portland, OR, band Heatmiser was best known for launching the career of singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, but other members of the group went on to have successful music careers long after Heatmisers demise. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Neil Gust went on to form the pop/rock band No. 2, while bassist Sam Coomes formed the popular indie pop duo Quasi with his then-wife, Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss. The more people who rate and post comments, the more obvious the manipulation of the view-count will look. It is clear that Google is not displaying the true number of views for this vid so that they can keep it out of the most-viewed list. I am shocked to find that LegitimacyCoalitions account has been taken down by YouTube. Why? He wouldnt have closed the account himself! His "Boycott YouTube" vid had over 100,000 views in one week! This is just outrageous YouTube, you cowards! ------------------------------- The purpose of this video is to raise awareness of the new policies that YouTube has implemented - such as algorithmic demotion of videos that contain profanities. These policies will no doubt remove our freedom speech on YouTube because the policies are so vague that they could be used to demote any video that YouTube personally doesnt like. What is profanity? What is kotuually suggestive? Just about anything could fall into those categories depending on the person doing the judging. YouTube is now admitting that they will fiddle the view counters on such videos in order to keep them out of the most-viewed lists, regardless of how popular the videos actually are. However, I know for a fact that theyve been fiddling the view counters ever since Google took over YouTube. The only difference now is that theyre admitting it while trying to justify it. A video that I uploaded two weeks ago received 55 honors within the first few hours of it being uploaded. Then, in one fell swoop, YouTube removed every single honor - even though the video had only been up on YouTube for 18 hours. The removal of these honors meant that the video no longer appeared in any of the lists. The video contained no profanity and no kotuually suggestive content, yet Google took it upon themselves to remove it from all of the lists. It is clear that Google is turning YouTube into nothing more than an extention of daytime mainstream television. Google wants a YouTube that is completely sanitized of true human expression. They want a YouTube that suits their advertisers - not you and me - the users. This shows where Google priorities lie. And it is laughable that theyre trying to con us into believing that they are making all these changes in order to make YouTube better for us. They dont listen to us at all. In YouTubes recent blogs that detail the changes theyve made, they have received over 10,000 negative comments from people complaining about all the mad changes theyve made. These changes include removing the bulletin boards from our channels, stopping us from sending videos to more than one person at a time, and demoting videos that YouTube considers to be profane. Anything can be considered profane if you choose to see it as profane. Lets face it, the whole thing is nonsensical and Google knows it! But they dont want to back down because they dont have the guts to admit theyre wrong. And of course, their allegance is to their advertisers and not their users. YouTube has removed a lot of the negative blog comments and now theyve set the comments to "Approval Only". Total Cowards! So what can we do when Google doesnt even respond to our complaints? Well we have to send a huge message to Google by boycotting every product they provide - this includes their search engine, gmail, maps, etc, etc. Oh, and whatever you do, please dont click on those annoying "Goooogle Ads". We should also stop using YouTube from December 19th to 21st. I will personally not use YouTube for at least a week from Dec 19th. If you value your freedom of speech and expression, and you want a fair and democratic YouTube, as it was before Google took it over, then please join us in the YouTube Blackout this Friday Dec 19th. This sequence features brief extracts from "Blackout (The Antiphony Video Supplement)" by Disinformation - Barry Hales highly influential (and frequently copied) film of concrete parabolic air-defence Sound Mirrors, built at various sites on the UK coast before WW2. "Blackout" was conceived as supplementary to Sound Mirror images by photographer Julian Hills (taken in January 1996) which appear on the sleeve of the Disinformation "Antiphony" double remix CD, published by the record company Ash International in 1997 [1] [2]. Barry Hales Sound Mirror video has been shown at NTT ICC (Tokyo), The Royal College of Art (London), Galerie fur Zeitgenossische Kunst (Leipzig), The Art House (London), Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt), The Dom (Moscow), and exhibited at The ICA (London), CCCB (Barcelona), The Mac (Birmingham), Now 1999 (Nottingham), Waygood Gallery (Newcastle), Quay Arts (Isle of Wight), Wrexham Arts Centre, South Hill Park (Bracknell), Saltburn Artists Projects, Q Gallery (Derby), Study Gallery of Modern Art (Poole), Event Gallery (London), Ginza Art Lab (Tokyo) and The Latvian National Museum of Art. Documentation of the Disinformation project appears in The Wire magazine in 1997; in "100% Pylon" by Angus Carlyle, pp. 68-83, "Themepark" 2, 2000; in The Hayward Gallery "Sonic Boom" catalogue, pp. 26-29, 2000; the "Sound Art - Sound as Media" catalogue, pp. 70-73, NTT ICC Tokyo 2000; "The Analysis of Beauty" catalogue 2003; the "Waves" catalogue, pp. 48-49, Latvian National Museum of Art 2006, etc. The "Antiphony Architectural Supplement" appears in Sound Projector 6, pp. 57-64, 1999 - //-slashseconds/issues/002/003/articles/jbanks2/index.php The long version of this film runs just short of 20 minutes, and (even in 2008) remains one of the most comprehensive visual surveys of these extraordinary structures ever conducted. One element notable by its absence from this edit is the long (and beautiful) abstract sequence which Barry created for the full version of this film. This video is virtually identical to later films by Tacita Dean and Lise Autogena, etc [3], and if there is any confusion about the similarity between the original Sound Mirrors film and Tacita Deans (much later) film "Sound Mirrors", readers should refer to art historian and curator Anda Rottenbergs letter to Art Monthly [4] about the similarity between artist Katarzyna Kozyras film "Bath House" - of people chatting in a bath house in Budapest, and Tacita Deans (much later) film "Gellert" - also of people chatting in a bath house in Budapest! Whats most surprising is the fact that Tacita Deans "Sound Mirrors" was commissioned (by The Public Art Development Trust) AFTER these "methods" had been exposed in the art press. In a virtuoso display of institutional gullibility, a plan by artist Lise Autogena to build 2 new communicating sound mirrors received funding from The Royal Society of Arts "Art for Architecture" scheme, The Arts Council England, Creative Partnerships, Shepway District Council and South East Arts, and support from Arts Catalyst, Demos, Fondation de France, and £70,000 from The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, despite Autogena freely admitting that (in her own words) she knows "absolutely nothing" [5] about acoustics! Anyone with any knowledge of meteorological or acoustic science would know that any proposal to use parabolic reflectors to transmit human speech across the English channel always was inherently technically unsound. However, when in trouble, reach for the "community", so this expenditure has not only been rationalised as a product of "idealism", but also justified on grounds that it provided opportunities to host workshops teaching schoolkids about (no kidding) "science". Despite the precedents, Autogenas website declares her ideas to be "groundbreaking" and "innovative" (!) and (equally predictably) contains passages that are almost verbatim quotes from earlier "Antiphony" texts. Writing in The Guardian, Tom Dyckhoff reported Autogenas promise to deliver the finished project "in 2002"... six years later, youd have thought the penny might have dropped, but resources are still being diverted away from viable projects to try and keep this one afloat. The greater tragedy is that in response to increased public interest, a deep trench has been cut in front of the main Sound Mirror site, which can only be crossed over a metal swing-bridge, which is normally locked shut - in other words the great and the good have responded to public enthusiasm for the Sound Mirrors, by spending public money on restricting public access to the Sound Mirrors. Regarding the YouTube blog, anyone suspect that that was more for the ADVERTISERS then for little users like us? Everyone bitching about not being able to say FUCK lets the advertisers breathe easily. Good for them. I would support such an endeavor like this black out day if it did not seem so futile to me. I agree saying FUCK is not a big deal, and should be allowed. And it IS allowed, but they SAY theyll algorythimically punish you for this, but I dont see this happened at all yet.
