Am pentatonic exercise using all 5 positions of the minor pentatonic scale, but in 4 note groupings and only using the top 2 strings (G and D).The exercise is played 4 times, 2 x starting on the root/octave, 1 x on the minor third and 1 x on the root again. Can of course be played over C major too - after all the Am pentatonic scale share exactly the same notes as the C major pentatonic scale. If Star Wars was filmed two decades earlier and Saul Bass did the opening title sequence, it "might" look like this... This was part of a school project. The song is "Machine" by the Buddy Rich Band off the album Big Swing Face (1967). Note Im aware of the errors in the video (spelling, Max Rebo), but I chose to leave them because the video is still enjoyable. This was just for fun and NOT a serious artistic endeavor! The Bass Master himself teaches a little of his playing technique in this "fair use" excerpt from a promo vid for his latest album (you can buy the full video at nowplayit). I think its interesting because of the closeups showing his fingering style. Also interesting I think is even though its "very simple" root notes, he still slips in little flourishes to give it some shape, like at 00 51 where he goes C-"F"-D (instead of straight C-D), and how he slides down from F-E at 01 07 keeping the string open instead of muffled like the rest. The most interesting part though I think is his discussion at 02 27 of how he was "tempted" to put in "fiddly bits" at the one part -- jumping up an octave -- and why you might do that if youre feeling "adventurous." I guess thats what musicianship is all about, when to do things like that and when to show restraint (he didnt do it in the final mix).

This cinematic tribute, created by Bret Primack, includes the Joe Lovano Nonet from "New Morning The Paris Concert," as well as video Bret shot at Joes "Streams of Expression" recording session in December of 2005. "Dennis left town on March 10, 2008," Bret explains, "the day of a Jazz at Lincoln Center benefit organized by his friends Joe Lovano and John Scofield. It was the third benefit for Dennis, following similar events at Smalls, and the Village Vanguard. When the Jazz community learned of his life threatening illness, there was an immediate response, an unprecedented burst of love and support, both financial and spiritual. In addition to being a world class bassist, his essential goodness, his easygoing nature, and laid back sense of humor made him a welcome presence in every situation. He will be missed, but never forgotten."
