House Arrest

We filmed this at the end of one of the sessions for Firework Songs, in October 2006. The original story had Becky turning her imprisonment to her advantage, escaping, whacking a guard, and killing the boss whod trapped her. However, I was really unhappy with the murky look of the piece (it was because of this I ended up buying proper lights) and we also lost some of the dialogue due to a microphone error, so I abandoned it. This version contains all the footage that survived, edited together as best I could.

Still, I know there are some gun-girl fans out there who may enjoy it so Im putting it online. What sums this piece up for me is that theres only one shot in it I like - the pan up from Becky assembling the gun to Eddys shock... And I even screw that up by getting a light in shot!

For fans of extra high quality murk, this clip can be downloaded as a higher res 16 9 DIVx format file from

A short sequence (can hardly call it a film!) with Fi Stevens, Becky Speed and Jeff Higgins. Mood-wise, I was going for something in the region of Silk Stalkings or the 1980s Mike Hammer.

This isnt quite the finished version as the music is stock, but otherwise its a finished edit.

Another slice of hilariously chaotic mayhem from the RBG Newsroom. This time we look at the obesity epidemic, the new and varying DVD formats, the problems global warming is causing with wildlife, and talk to those affected by the first man in Britain to be deported after an ASBO. All while anchorman Mangrove Badgerhunt fends off a violent rabbit and pathologically crazed 1980s comedians.

A spoof news round-up thats more in the vein of what Ive wanted to do for some time. This is my entry - via my Red Blue Green Productions group of helpful friends - for the Marillion video contest. Its about the way that big business profits in every way from making people scared, and is a bit of a rant at the general populace for letting this happen.
Hey Little Girl

Music video, set to the excellent 1982 track "Hey Little Girl" by Australian band Icehouse. Id been looking for a while to do a video specifically for a song (any bands reading this wanting a video, let me know!), rather than just editing footage to music at a later date, and the words for HLG started to suggest the story you find here.

In a nutshell its how a girl has her femininity stolen from her by the murder of her parents, how this subverts many of the icons of being a woman for her, and how she only frees herself by becoming her enemy. However, you could argue that although shes regained her life, shes lost her childhood, so its not necessarily a happy ending...

I storyboarded the whole video, then created an animatic to make sure it worked. Then we filmed almost all the footage on Thursday 1st March with Becky Speed, with some pickups with the henchmen actors on 4th March. Editing took about 2 days all in all, including faking up newspapers, photos and the FX with the "ghost bullets". It was filmed with a Panasonic GS500, edited with Uleads VideoEditor, with graphics work done in Photoshop.

Guns and girls fans, make the most of this as its probably the last thing Ill do that appeals directly to the G&G crowd. Theres other things to do, and at the moment Ive run out of money anyway!

I would dedicate this to my Grandma who died in February, but she probably wouldnt appreciate the gesture. But shes missed, anyway...

Firework Songs

 "Its all about the numbers".

Initially intended to be created as a Halloween tale, a variety of factors meant this film was delayed until now.

My first proper short film, it was scripted and storyboarded in October. We filmed most of the footage on 4th November, 31st December, 24th February and 1st March (see if you can spot the different haircuts!), with various fill-ins and inserts done around that time. It was all shot on a Panasonic GS500, edited with Uleads VideoEditor program, and FX and graphics work was done in Photoshop and VideoPaint. Editing and FX took about 5 days, all in all, with an animatic created first to ensure the storyboard covered all necessary shots.

Apart from a few specially-recorded sound effects, the firework background is genuine noise recorded on the night of 4th November. It gets very loud around our way! Many of the visual flashes were done in post-production as the intensity of the lights being used for interiors meant that light outside wasnt making much of a difference.

While it has some of the gun-girl elements of my previous work, this is the first where Ive consciously tried to get away from that dynamic. First and foremost it is an attempt to tell a story. The gungirl trappings (such as there are) are simply elements of the world in which it is set. For those interested, its a meditation on moral courage. The choice facing the protagonists is an impossible one, that ends in their doom either way. But they could have chosen to save a life by not answering a phone. After they do, their fate is sealed.

A hi-res, 16 9 DIVx version of this film can be downloaded from //-megaupload/?d=GZODJ9XD

She Opens Roses

I was contacted in mid-March by Johnny Stokes (aka Blue Light of Dawn, Golden Ratio), an unsigned Electronica musician working in Ireland whod seen some of my music video edits and wanted to commission a specially-shot one for one of his own songs. After some discussion, we settled on the ambient piece "She Opens Roses". My pitch for this was of two people -- a former couple -- who have split up, and now neither of whom can fully experience life. The woman is in a lush environment full of natural life but she cant appreciate the colour of it any more. The man has colour in his life, but its in a sterile cityscape where he cannot relate to the people around him. Its only when the man acknowledges his love for the woman that both of them are able to experience life completely.

We location scouted and filmed in Central London (on 30th March and 1st April respectively), and then did the same for a variety of locations in South Wales (on 13th-14th March). This is the first video Ive worked on where we couldnt accurately storyboard beforehand. The Wales work involved finding locations where the lines (horizons, paths, trees, etc) could match the London lines, and then filming lots of material in the hope that it could be matched.

Editing took nearly six days, largely because of the involved nature of the "ghost people" scenes, and the customised crossfades (intended to show how neither character was really out of the others mind) which had to be individually created through a number of specially created masks. As ever, footage was recorded on a Panasonic GS500, edited in Uleads Video Editor package, with various image manipulation done in Photoshop.

The musician decided in the end not to use the video, but was kind enough to give me permission to use it in my portfolio. More examples of my work can be found here in my You Tube account, and a DIVx, higher-res version of the video can be downloaded from
