When The saints Go Marching In, performed live.
Listen how well the band builds up the tension and the extremely swinging groove towards the final chorusses. This kind of swing is very seldom heard nowadays and it is supported by the harmonic modulations, that came spontanious during this performance. You can hear the bandleader giving the new key(s), and the whole band following without hesitation.
This band has a nice blend of sophisticated routines and spontanious action that keeps the musicians alert and may surprise the audience.
No two performances are the same.

				Dixieland Crackerjacks,
 //-dixielandcrackerjacks
playing Original Dixieland One-Step. Recorded April 21. 2007 in Lekkerkerk.
Michel Muller - trumpet
Selena Kuiper - trombone
Bert Brandsma - clarinet
Koos Greven - banjo
Ray Vanderhooft - drums
Henk Haverhoek - bass

This one was recorded before a live audience of over 1000 people. It was an evening with very varried entertainment, a modern jazz combo, a big choir, a female choir and a group in traditional dutch clothing also shared the bill. The traditional dutch clothing can be seen in the background on the main stage.
Because of the superb acoustics of the hall and the power the band is able to give, it was possible to play this concert without amplification, thats why you are able to hear this great natural balanced sound quality.
Since 2004 Henk Haverhoek plays bass in the Dixieland Crackerjacks concert band. He played with many famous musicians like Ben Webster (Last gig and last record of Big Ben) , Dexter Gordon, Ray Nance-Frank Rosolino, Max Roach, Joe Pass, Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Don Byas, Eddy Lockjaw Davis, Jean Toots Tielemans, Benny Carter, Illinois Jacquet, and many , many others.
He plays on the Crackerjacks most recent album, The Caribbean Suite as well.
Ray Vanderhooft is since 2000 regular drummer in the band, his first album was Ill See You In My Dreams.

"Tiger Rag" is a jazz standard, originally recorded by the Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1917.

The tune was first recorded on 17 August, 1917 by the Original Dixieland Jass Band for Aeolian-Vocalion Records. The Aeolian Vocalion sides did not sell well, as they were recorded in a vertical format becoming obsolete at the time which could not be played successfully on most contemporary phonographs. Their second recording of the tune on 25 March, 1918 for Victor Records, on the other hand, was a smash national hit. The song was credited to O.D.J.B. members Nick La Rocca, Eddie Edwards, Henry Ragas, Tony Sbarbaro, and Larry Shields, along with Harry Da Costa.

After Original Dixieland Jass Band records, the tune gained national popularity. Dance band and march orchestrations were published for the benefit of bands that couldnt get the hang of the new "jazz" music.

Hundreds of recordings of the tune appeared in the late 1910s and through the 1920s. Among the more notable is the New Orleans Rhythm Kings version with a clarinet solo by Leon Roppolo.

The ubiquitous tune even echoed around the ruins of Chichen Itza in the 1920s, as archaeologist Sylvanus Morley played it over and over on his wind up phonograph.

With the coming of sound film, it often appeared on soundtracks of both live action movies and animated cartoons when something very energetic was wanted.

Studies in Swing No.1, 1927, with Nat Gonella on solo trumpet.

The Mills Brothers became a national sensation with their hit vocal recording of "Tiger Rag" in 1931.

That same year the Washboard Rhythm Kings record of the tune has been listed as anticipatory of rock &amp; roll.

Art Tatum made his formidable presence known throughout the jazz community with his 1932 recording of "Tiger Rag". This recording continues to inspire and terrify pianists around the world.

During the early 1930s "Tiger Rag" became a standard showoff piece for Big Band arrangers and soloists, especially in England, where Ambrose, Jack Hylton, Lew Stone, Billy Cotton, Jack Payne, and Ray Noble all made recordings of it. The tune fell from popularity during the Swing era, as it had become something of a cliché.

Django Reinhardt also made a recording of Tiger Rag.

Roy Smeck made several recordings of the Tiger Rag on a ukulele over his career.

It was a hit for Les Paul and Mary Ford in 1952.

In 1954, it was heard as in the MGM cartoon, the Tex Avery-directed Dixieland Droopy, which Droopy plays on his record. Its also what the flea jazz band that gets on Droopy performs in this cartoon.

The song was added to the Library of Congresss National Recording Registry in 2002.

Tiger Rag was recently used in a famous ad - the "Banned Xbox 360 Ad Best Ad Ever!", advertising Xbox 360 console from Microsoft.

Many sports teams across America have a tiger as their mascot, and some of them use a version of Tiger Rag as their fight song.

Tiger Rag -- "The Song That Shakes the Southland" -- is Clemson Universitys familiar fight song and is performed at all Tiger sporting events, pep rallies and parades.

Tiger Rag is a popular song of the Louisiana State University Tiger Marching Band. A rendition of the hit song is played at every LSU home game right before the team takes the field (known as the "pregame" or "touchdown" song), in what is considered by many as "the loudest and craziest pre-game party in college football."

Tiger Rag is a secondary fight song for the University of Missouri, Princeton University, and Auburn University.

It has often been played by Dixieland bands at Detroit Tigers home games, and was particularly popular during the Tigers runs to the 1934 and 1935 World Series.

The Cuyahoga Falls Marching Tiger Band of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio plays Tiger Rag as one of their main fight songs.

The Massillon Tiger Swing Band of Massillon, Ohio began playing Tiger Rag at Massillon Washington High School Tigers football games in 1938 during the period the Tigers were coached by the legendary Paul Brown. It has been a Tiger tradition ever since.

				PALESTEENA
(Lena From Palesteena)
Shimmy by J. Russel Robinson &amp; Con Conrad

In the Bronx of New York City
Lived a girl, shes not so pretty
Lena is her name.
Such a clever girl is Lena
How she played her concertina
Really, its a shame.
Shes such a good musician
She got a swell position
To go across the sea to entertain.
And so they shipped poor Lena
Way out to Palesteena
From what they tell me, she dont look the same.
They say that Lena is the Queen o Palesteena
Just because she plays the concertina.
She only knows one song,
She plays it all day long
Sometimes she plays it wrong,
But still they love it
What more of it
I heard her play once or twice.
Oh! Murder! Still, it was nice.
All the girls, they dress like Lena
Some wear oatmeal, some Farina
Down old Palesteena way.

Lenas girlfriend Arabella
Let her meet an Arab fella
Who she thought was grand.
On a camels back a-swaying
You could hear Miss Lena playing
Over the desert sand.
She didnt know the new ones
All she knew were blue ones
And Yusef sat and listened all day long
(or Till Yusef sat and listened in his tent)
And as he tried to kiss her
You heard that Arab whisper,
"Oh Lena, how I love to hear your song!"
(or "Oh Lena, how I love your instrument!")

They say that Lena is the Queen o Palesteena
Cause she shakes a wicked concertina.
She plays it day and night
She plays with all her might
She never gets it right,
You think its funny,
Gets her money.
Theres nothin sounds like it should.
So rotten, its really good.
While the Arabs danced so gaily
She would practice aily-aily
Down old Palesteena way.

Lena, shes the Queen o Palesteena
Goodness, how they love her concertina.
Each movement of her wrist
Just makes them shake and twist
They simply cant resist
How they love it
Want more of it.
When she squeeks
That squeeze-box stuff
All those sheiks
Just cant get enough.
She got fat as he got Lena
Pushing on her concertina
Down old Palesteena way.

The ORIGINAL DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND billed themselves "The Creators of Jazz". Their record "Livery Stable Blues" became the first Jazz record ever released on February 26, 1917 for the Victor Talking Machine Company. It was wildly successful. Its release signaled the beginning of the Jazz age and helped define the wild, exuberent era we call the "Roaring Twenties". The Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1916 moved from New Orleans to Chicago and then to New York where, on the recommendation of Al Jolson, they landed a gig at Reisenwebers Café on Columbus Circle and 58th Street, a fashionable restaurant and night-spot. The band was an immediate success, with their top hats that spelled out "Dixie", playing the trombones slide with the foot, and so on. Their leader Nick La Rocca and cornet player delighted in stirring up the press, describing themselves as musical anarchists and coining fun statements like "Jazz is the assassination of the melody, its the slaying of syncopation". After the Reisenwebers Café engagement end the band played at the Alamo Cafe (148th Street) and the College Inn at Coney Island. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band went on to record and play in London, producing 20 tracks for Columbia. They returned to America in July of 1920, but the public began to tire of them and they never regained the sales or popularity of their initial success. The group broke up in 1925 after La Rocca suffered a nervous breakdown.

				Jazz me Blues
 //-dixielandcrackerjacks
Recorded live in shopping mall Lewenborg, Groningen, the Netherlands.
Hein Overbeek - banjo
Coos Zwagerman - trumpet
Lielian Tan - drums
Slidin Selena - trombone
Bert Brandsma - bass-saxophone

Dixieland Crackerjacks first recorded this piece in 1995 on their CD Red Roses for a Blue Lady. This CD is totally sold out and now a rare collecters item.

A very impressive version of this number was recorded by Bix Beiderbecke and his Gang, Octobre 5th, 1927
One of the six great pieces he made with Adrian Rollini on Bass-saxophone, sure belonging to the all time highlights in the entire history of dixieland recordings.

Adrian Francis Rollini (June 28, 1903 - May 15, 1956) was a multi-instrumentalist best known for his Jazz music. He played the bass saxophone, piano, xylophone, and many other instruments.
Rollini was born June 28, 1903 to Ferdinand Rollini and Adele Augenti Rollini. (Some sources will date 1904, but his brother Arthur, as well as social security records will attest to the earlier date.) He was born in New York into a somewhat wealthy family (his father worked for the American Cigarette Company). He was the eldest of several children, including sister Vera and brother Arthur (born 13 February 1912, Arthur played tenor saxophone with Benny Goodman from 1934 to 1939, and later with Will Bradley). Growing up in Larchmont, New York, he showed musical ability early on, and began to take piano lessons on a miniature piano, at the age of 2. Before long he had gained "child prodigy" status and was good enough to play for an audience - he gave a 15 minute Chopin recital at the Waldorf Astoria at the age of four.
As a teenager he continued with music and by age 14 he was leading his own group comprised of neighborhood boys, in which he doubled on piano and xylophone. He gigged around and finally made his break in 1922, when he began to play for the California Ramblers. Originally intended to play piano for them, the manager, Ed Kirkeby, suggested to him that he learn the somewhat cumbersome bass saxophone as a possible tuba double. It only took him 2 weeks until he began playing and recording with the bass saxophone.
Over time, he developed a distinctive style. "It swung and it spoke. It had that sense of importance about it, a sense that someone is talking to you and saying something very important." He cut many sides under the California Ramblers and formed two subgroups- The Little Ramblers (starting in 1924) and the Goofus Five (most prominently 1926-1927). Rollinis swing and impetus are quite evident; "Clementine (From New Orleans)", "Vo-Do-Do-De-O Blues", and "And Then I Forget" are among some of the best recordings that not only typify the era but showcase the prominence and power that Rollini brought to the table. During this time, he managed to lay down hundreds of sessions with names like Annette Hanshaw, Cliff Edwards (Ukelele Ike), Joe Venuti and his Blue Four, The University Six, Miff Mole, and Red Nichols to name a few. Some of his best work would include the Bix sides he cut. (Scattered throughout the 1920s, Rollinis great bass sax solos were on scores of records, and they usually outstanding.)

1927 was a landmark year for jazz and Rollini, as not only did he participate in numerous sides, but he also got the job heading up the talent roster for the opening of the Club New Yorker. It was a short-lived organization, a whos-who of 1920s jazz, including Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Frank Signorelli and Frank Trumbauer. Sadly, salary demands began to rise, and the club had its own shortcomings, which proved a bad combination in the end, and the arrangement only lasted for some 3 weeks.it was not long until other talent would be seeking his name. From across the pond, a young English band leader by the name of Fred Elizalde was leading a band in London at the Savoy Ballroom, and he was looking for the best American jazzmen to spice up his already hot sound. He found Rollini, as well as Chelsey Quealey, Bobby Davis, Tommy Felline and Jack Russin. They all agreed to join him in 1927 and stayed until September of 1928. This time was interrupted when Adrian received word from the States that his father was in declining health. Rollini took a ship back to the States to see his father, and to ask his blessing in his marriage to his fiancée, Dixie. His father indeed gave his blessing and the two were married. Their voyage to England served as their honeymoon. They took brother Art back with them over to England.

After finishing their stay with Elizalde, Rollini and the gang returned to New York, but by the time they got back the California Ramblers had pretty much folded, as raccoon coats, flappers, and everything else that they had come to be so closely connected to had become a thing of the past. He continued to work, recording with such artists as Lee Morse, The Dorsey Brothers, Ben Selvin and Jack Teagarden. The 1930s saw a shift in musical idea- away from the "hot" sound and towards a more centered, polished sound, and Rollini adapted. In 1932 he formed Adrian Rollini and his Orchestra (primarily a studio group assembled for recording), and they began to record in 1933, primarily for Vocalion and Banner. While Rollini did manage to assemble some great talent for example Bunny Berigan, Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden, do not expect these records to sound like the Rollini of old - while his beautiful tone and polish is there, you wont find them to be as hot or exciting as the older late 20s cuts, as they were commercial pop recordings. (Particularly great recordings from this period were his work with Joe Venuti, as well as "Savage Serenade", "Who Walks In While I Walk Out?" and "Got The Jitters" recorded under his own name. These were hot sides with plenty of great Goodman solos.)

His other groups would include the Adrian Rollini Quintette, The Adrian Rollini Trio (primarily late 1930s) and Adrian and his Tap Room Gang which was based in the Hotel President at 234 West 48th Street in New York City. Rollini reportedly managed the club inside of the hotel for a short while as well as leading the orchestra. In these recordings, you will notice a gradual shift in Adrians focus from the bass saxophone to the vibraphone. This is not so much that Rollini was giving up on the bass saxophone or his abilities - only it is now fading popularity in the big band scene - for example, Duke Ellington and Artie Shaw werent exactly featuring a bass saxophone on the bandstand. Rollini responded, recording on it for the last time in 1938. He continued to be active with vibraphone and chimes, but sadly, when he gave up his role as a bass saxophonist, his role in jazz went with it.

He went on to play hotels, as well as arranging and writing songs behind the scenes, collaborating with such names as Vaughan Monroe but he never did any big recording once the big band era really got underway- his trio pretty much represents the last of his great work. After these, he faded from the big scene, appearing here and there. He can be seen in a 1938 short entitled "For Auild lang Syne" starring James Cagney, as well as "Himber Harmonics" (1938) where he appears with the trio, and "Melody Masters Swing Style" (1939). He also did a brief tour in the late 1940s in which he came to the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas, as well as other cities.
Rollini settled in Florida where he last worked at the Eden Roc Hotel in September 1955. He also operated the Driftwood Lodge at Tavernier Key. He died May 15, 1956 at the age of 52. His brother Art claims Rollini fell down a flight of stairs and met his demise; however, the British magazine The Melody Maker wrote in a May 26, 1956 article that he had been found dead in a blood-splattered car with one of his feet nearly severed. They claim he died in hospital after suffering a heart attack and lung collapse. Others say he died of pneumonia and complications following a liver ailment, while still others argue that perhaps the mob was involved in his death. The actual location of Rollinis death was the James Archer Smith Hospital in Homestead, Florida. He died after an 18 day stay in the hospital following a severe trauma to his ankle suffered in the early morning hours (apparently from an auto-related accident)in the parking lot of The Green Turtle Inn at Islamorada Key. This historic Florida Keys restaurant recently closed its doors in late 2004, ending a famous part of history in the middle Keys after almost 60 years of operation. After Rollinis death, the old Driftwood Lodge was destroyed in severe hurricane that pounded the Florida Keys in 1960. Today, the site of the old Driftwood has been developed into a private home.

Celtic singer Charlie Zahm performs a Civil War Southern medley of "Rebel Soldier" and "Dixie" at the Gloucester County Library in Mullica Hill, NJ on November 4, 2006. Dixie is available on his "Americana" CD (its a medley with a different song) Visit Charlie online at //-charliezhamCeltic singer Charlie Zahm is based in Pennsylvania.

Dixie Land
I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten;
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!

In Dixies Land where I was born in,
Early on one frosty morning,
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!

CHORUS
Then I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixies Land Ill take my stand, to live and die in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!

Old Missus married "Will the Weaver";
William was a gay deceiver!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!
But when he put his arm around her,
Smiled as fierce as a forty-pounder!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!--

His face was sharp as a butchers cleaver;
But that did not seem to grieve her!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!

Old Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!--

Now heres a health to the next old missus
And all the gals that want to kiss us!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!

But if you want to drive away sorrow,
Come and hear this song tomorrow!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!--

Theres buckwheat cakes and Injin batter,
Makes you fat or a little fatter!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!

Then hoe it down and scratch your gravel,
To Dixies Land Im bound to travel!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixies Land!

Recorded live on the Island of Schiermonnikoog.
Dixieland Crackerjacks playing Irving Berlins Alexanders Ragtime Band

"Alexanders Ragtime Band" is the name of a song by Irving Berlin. It was his first major hit, in 1911. There is some evidence, although inconclusive, that Irving Berlin borrowed the melody from a draft composition submitted by Scott Joplin that had been submitted to a publisher.[1]

"Alexanders Ragtime Band" is not itself an example of the ragtime musical idiom; apart from some mild syncopation, it has almost none of ragtimes characteristic features. Nonetheless, the lyrics clearly refer to the arrival of African-American musicians on the popular scene with their then-new idea of playing standard songs in a more exciting up-tempo style.

The first lines establish the African-American context

Oh ma honey . . . aint you goin to the leaderman, the ragged meter man
References to "jazzing up" popular music include

They can play a bugle call like you never heard before
So natural that you want to go to war
Thats just the bestest band what am, honey lamb
and

If you care to hear the Swanee River played in ragtime
The new style included new ways of playing traditional instruments as well

Theres a fiddle with notes that screeches
Like a chicken
And the clarinet is a colored pet
This song was played on the decks of the Titanic by the ships band, as the ship sank beneath the waters on April 15, 1912.

The song has been recorded by many artists, including Al Jolson, Billy Murray, Louis Armstrong, George Formby, Bing Crosby, The Andrews Sisters, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles.

A 1938 film of the same name was loosely based on the song.

A version of the song set to a disco beat was recorded by Ethel Merman for her infamous Ethel Merman Disco Album in 1979.

The song was used in Tennessee politics by Lamar Alexander, a trained pianist, Governor of Tennessee and U.S. Senator, who performed the song for campaign events, including during his 1996 run for the Republican presidential nomination.

Played on my Victrola with Mica soundbox. The result is much better than Orthophonic/Electric playbacks or even better than the modern transfers.

Dixieland Crackerjacks in Jazz Club Kaarst
 //-dixielandcrackerjacks
The band on tour in Germany, June 22. 2008.
Whispering was allready recorded by the Dixieland Crackerjacks in 2001 on the CD St. James in Germany. It was during that time the opener of the concert program, like when the band played the Dresden Dixieland festival.

The verse is stated by Bert Brandsma on his bass saxophone.
Michel Muller - trumpet
Slidin Selena - trombone
Koos Greven - banjo
Raymond van der Hooft - drums

Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra was the most popular band of the 1920s and represented the apex of jazz to the general public. Over the years, critics and some musicians like Eddie Condon, have not had kind words to say about the band and have tended to represent Whiteman as a bad influence on the music in his attempts to "Make a lady out of Jazz". The title of "The King Of Jazz" which Whiteman was billed as seems somewhat politically incorrect these days, but in the 1920s he dominated the scene and hired the best White hot musicians like Bix Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Jack Teagarden and many more to play in his band. Paul Whiteman greatly enriched American music by commissioning George Gershwin to write Rhapsody In Blue which became his orchestras signature tune. He also "discovered" Bing Crosby and featured him in Paul Whitemans Rhythm Boys, and gave the career of Hoagy Carmichael a boost, by recording several of Hoagys songs early in his career. Jazz singer Mildred Bailey also rose to fame in the orchestra in the 1930s. So, what was it that has led Whitemans name to be dragged through the mud in the annals of Jazz history? Paul Whiteman being the most popular Jazz band leader of the Jazz Age is blamed for the racism in America that denied African-American musicians the credit that they deserved in the history of Jazz. If there is such a thing as the "King of Jazz" the title belongs to Louis Armstrong, although that may not have been clear to most people in the 1920s. Whiteman is also criticized for not hiring African-American musicians to play in his band, but this argument ignores the commercial realities of the period. Paul Whiteman was clearly not a racist. He commissioned Duke Ellington to write for his modern music series, recorded with Paul Robeson and Billie Holiday, and hired Don Redman as an arranger in the 1930s and was generally held in high regards as a person by musicians both Black and White. The worst that can be leveled at Whiteman was that he was a businessman. His band was wildly successful financially, and quite often his music sounds commercial and sweet, especially when compared to the top African-American Jazz bands of the era. Despite that, Whiteman made some very good Jazz records in the 1920s such as San, Washboard Blues, Mississippi Mud, Whiteman Stomp, Wang Wang Blues and Im Coming, Virginia. His interest in making symphonic Jazz led the way for generations of Jazz musicians as diverse as Miles Davis, Gil Evans, The Modern Jazz Quartet and Winton Marsalis, who may not directly cite Whiteman as an influence, but have certainly walked down the path that he blazed at points in their careers.

				Beale Street Blues
 //-dixielandcrackerjacks
Dixieland Crackerjacks at Hotel Graaf Bernstorff, the Island of Schiermonnikoog, the Netherlands.
Recorded live, December 30th. 2008

Michel Muller - trumpet
Bert Brandsma - bass saxophone

Also some talking while traveling on the ship from the mainland to schiermonnikoog.

"Beale Street Blues" is a 1916 song by American composer and lyricist W.C. Handy. The title refers to Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, the main entertainment district for the citys African American population in the early part of the twentieth century, and a place closely associated with the development of the blues. The song was published by the Pace and Handy music company in 1917, but was first popularized for a mass audience when sung on Broadway by Gilda Gray in the 1919 musical revue Schuberts Gaieties.

Like many of Handys songs, Beale Street Blues is a hybrid of the blues style with the popular ballad style of the day, the opening lyrics following a line pattern typical of Tin Pan Alley songs and the later stanzas giving way to the traditional three-line pattern characteristic of the blues.

"Beale Street Blues" has been recorded by dozens of noted artists, from early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, and Alberta Hunter, to more modern versions by Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Dixieland Crackerjacks and Tommy Dorsey. The song itself is now in the public domain in the United States, due to expiration of the copyright, though most of the recordings of it are still covered by their own copyrights.

Beale Street Blues Lyrics
Ive seen the lights of gay Broadway,
Old Market Street down by the Frisco Bay,
Ive strolled the Prado, Ive gambled on the Bourse;
The seven wonders of the world Ive seen,
And many are the places I have been,
Take my advice, folks, and see Beale Street first!
Youll see pretty browns in beautiful gowns,
Youll see tailor-mades and hand-me-downs,
Youll meet honest men, and pick-pockets skilled,
Youll find that business never ceases til somebody gets killed!
If Beale Street could talk, if Beale Street could talk,
Married men would have to take their beds and walk,
Except one or two who never drink booze,
And the blind man on the corner singing "Beale Street Blues!"
Id rather be there than any place I know,
Id rather be there than any place I know,
Its gonna take a sergeant for to make me go!
Im goin to the river, maybe by and by,
Yes, Im goin to the river, maybe by and by,
Because the rivers wet, and Beale Streets done gone dry

				Muskrat Ramble
 //-dixielandcrackerjacks

Trumpet player Michel Muller sings Kid Orys Muskrat Ramble in Dutch!
Slidin Selena, who sometimes gets critisized for playing too clean, here proves that she is perfectly able to play the rough and ready tailgate style whenever she wants to.
Lielian Tan on drums and Koos Greven, banjo play there nicely swinging groove and Bert Brandsma gives one of his virtuosic and surprisingly inventive solos on the Bass-saxophone.
Recorded in Zwolle, the Netherlands, July 4. 2007.

Edward "Kid" Ory (December 25, 1886 -- January 23, 1973) was a jazz trombonist, composer and bandleader.
Ory is considered as being the most important Tailgate trombone player of all times.

He starred in movies like New Orleans (1947) and the Benny Goodman story (1955)

He was born in Woodland Plantation near LaPlace, Louisiana.

Ory started playing music with home-made instruments in his childhood, and by his teens was leading a well regarded band in South-East Louisiana. He kept La Place as his base of operations due to family obligations until his 21st birthday, when he moved his band to New Orleans, Louisiana.

He had one of the best-known bands in New Orleans in the 1910s, hiring many of the greats, including cornetists Joe "King" Oliver, Mutt Carey, and Louis Armstrong; and clarinetists Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone.

In 1919 he moved to Los Angeles, one of a number of New Orleans musicians to do so at about that time, and he recorded there in 1922 with a band including Mutt Carey, clarinetist (also a pianist) Dink Johnson, and string bassist Ed Garland. (Garland and Carey were longtime associates who were still with Ory during his 1940s comeback.) In 1925, Ory moved to Chicago, where he was very active, working and recording with Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, "King" Oliver, Johnny Dodds, and many others.

During the Great Depression Ory retired from music in 1933, and would not play again until 1943. From 1944 to about 1961 he led one of the top New Orleans style bands of the period. In addition to Mutt Carey and Ed Garland, trumpeters Alvin Alcorn and Teddy Buckner; clarinetists Darnell Howard, Jimmie Noone, Albert Nicholas, Barney Bigard, and George Probert; pianists Buster Wilson and Don Ewell; and drummer Minor Hall were among his sidemen during this period. All but Probert, Buckner, and Ewell were originally from New Orleans. The Ory band was an important force in reviving interest in New Orleans jazz, making popular radio broadcasts -- among them a number of slots on Orson Welles Mercury Theatre broadcast and a jazz history series sponsored by Standard Oil -- and recordings.

Ory was also the composer of numbers including "Muskrat Ramble", "Orys Creole Trombone", and "Savoy Blues".

Ory retired from music in 1966 and spent his last years in Hawaii.

South was the signature tune of Benny Motens Kansas City Orchestra

The period from 1920s to the early 1930s is [in someones opinion] the best sound in Jazz around. I love everything about the jazz of this era. Bennie Moten is probably best remembered as the leader of the band which would later evolve into Count Basies band and eventually the Count Basie Orchestra. And that is a real shame too, because Bennie Moten was one the greatest ragtime pianists of his time, whose orchestra would set the scene for Kansas City jazz. One of the biggest competitors of Bennie Moten in the 1920s was Walter Page and his "Blue Devils." When Walter Page began to get less and less gigs, it was Bennie Moten that moved into the forefront of Kansas City jazz.

Bennie Moten did this by acquiring many of the talented band members of Walter Pages band. Among them Eddie Durham, Jimmy Rushing, Hot Lips Page, and of course the famous Count Basie. In fact, it was Bennie Moten who was so impressed with Count Basies playing on the piano, that he would have Basie do the recordings on record, while Moten would do the occassional performance on piano while on tour. The most famous of the recordings that Bennie Moten performed were his last sessions, sometime in late 1932. These are also the most popular with jazz enthusiasts. However, for me, these early recordings are my favorite. [Not that the later ones are bad]. I just happen to like the raw sound of these early Bennie Moten recordings.

Unfortunately, Bennie Moten died in 1935 from a tonsillectomy operation. A BOTCHED ONE AT THAT! The band never took off after his death, and eventually, Basie would begin his own journey to great stardom a couple of years later. [But hey, Basie was talented]. Among some of the great songs on this CD, are CRAWDAD BLUES, SOUTH [one of my favorite jazz pieces of the era] VINE STREET BLUES, TULSA BLUES, SOUTH STREET BLUES, SISTER HONKY TONK, 18th STREET STRUT [a great jazz tune] KATER STREET RAG, HARMONY BLUES, KANSAS CITY SHUFFLE, WHITE LIGHTNIN BLUES, and MUSCLE SHOALS BLUES, among others. They are ALL great jazz pieces, and you really need to check out this wonderful sound. Amazon has a listening sample on these songs, I highly recommend that you check them out. They are great. Especially the jazz piece "South." You will notice how different this jazz is to later periods. Its great music!

Britney Spears, Madonna, Céline Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Shania Twain and Christina Aguilera all can get a run for their money when Slidin Selena starts singing Dr. Jazz!
The vocals include the verse and are sung in Dutch language. No studio recording, simply played or sang live and in tune!
It was allready a hit recording in the 1920s when Jelly Roll Mortons red hot peppers.

Recorded November 11. 2007
Henk Haverhoek, the bass player is a lion on his own, having played with jazz giants like Ben Webster, Frank Rosolino, Dexter Gordon and Benny Carter.
This was Slidin Selenas last concert in the year 2007, because of her being pregnant she takes a 4 month break till March 2008.
Lielian Tan makes her debut in the Hague Jazzclubs, she and the audience hope she will return often.
The Clarinet is played by the Invisible Man (almost), dont confuse him with the Invincible Man, or would they be the same person......?
Koos Greven plays the banjo steady as a rock. Our human metronome is much inspired by Freddy Green, of Count Basie fame.
Michel Muller is the front lead man on his trumpet.

The tune was composed and first recorded on August 17, 1917 by the Original Dixieland Jass Band for Aeolian-Vocalion Records. The song was copyrighted and credited to O.D.J.B. members Nick La Rocca, Eddie Edwards, Henry Ragas, Tony Sbarbaro, and Larry Shields, along with Harry Da Costa.

However, other New Orleans, Louisiana musicians claimed that the tune had been a standard in the city even before. Some others even copyrighted the same melody or close variations on it under their own names, including Ray Lopez under the title "Weary Weasel" and Johnny DeDroit under the title "Number Two Blues". A number of veterans of Papa Jack Laines band said the tune had been known in New Orleans as "Number Two" long before the O.D.J.B. copyrighted it. In one interview, Papa Jack Laine said that the actual composer of the number was Achille Baquet. Punch Miller claimed to have originated the cornet &amp; trombone breaks with Jack Carey, and that from Careys characteristic growl many locals called the tune "Play Jack Carey". Jelly Roll Morton also claimed to have written the tune, basing part of it on his jazzed up version of an old French quadrille. Ironically, Morton covered the ODJB copyrighted version himself in 1938, tacitly conceding that ODJB had composed the song.

While the exact details are unclear, it seems that at least something similar to Tiger Rag or various strains of it was played in New Orleans before the Original Dixieland Jass Band recorded it. How close these were to the O.D.J.B.s recording is a matter of speculation. The O.D.J.B.s record seems to have helped solidify a standard a version or head arrangement of the number. Curiously, however, one strain in the O.D.J.B. recordings (just before the famous "hold that tiger" chorus) is almost invariably left out of later recordings and performances of the number.

In my short time working with with 78 RPM Records Ive come to think what i thought was Vintage sound and recording may actual have been a false preception of Music pre 1920. Ive read Victor Recording and Gramaphone manuals and they repeatly state 78rpm recorded at 78rpm. But i speculate 78 was not the stardard. Every sound engineer and artist were froced to make concessions on pitch, recording time and optimum preformance. Recording studio would fit longer playing times on a limited recording surface roughly 3 00 min. A Standard fox trot preformance would last 5 to 4 minutes. Result higher pitch and playback which would sound better on the gramaphone of the day it would be muted and muddled if played at its correct speed. SO i slowed down the Original Dixieland jazz band early recordings and slowed it to a danceable tempo. And low and behold i dicovered whta i believe is the real sound of the Original dixieland Jazz band. No longer a crazy recording but a full well planned dance numbers full of life and contract against the standard Fox trot of the day. In some incidences i bought the sheet music andlisten to Player Piano Roll of the song song. So enjoy "The Tiger rag", St Louis Blues, Royal Garden Blues and At the Jazzman Band Ball. Complete with picture of the day.

Realization and editing by Antonio Parisi adservicemanitatiscali.it

Hoagland Howard "Hoagy" Carmichael (November 22, 1899 -- December 27, 1981) was an American composer, pianist, singer, actor, and bandleader. He is best known for writing the melody to "Stardust" (1927), one of the most-recorded American songs of all time. Carmichael always spelled it "Star Dust", but the space is usually dispensed with.

Alec Wilder, in his study of the American popular song, concluded that Hoagy Carmichael was the "most talented, inventive, sophisticated and jazz-oriented" of the hundreds of writers composing pop songs in the first half of the 20th century.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Carmichael was the only son of Howard Clyde Carmichael and Lida Robison. He was named Hoagland after a circus troupe "The Hoaglands" who stayed at the Carmichael house during his mothers pregnancy. Howard was a horse-drawn taxi driver and electrician, and Lida a versatile pianist who played accompaniment at silent movies and for parties. The family moved frequently, as Howard sought better employment for his growing family. At six, Carmichael started to sing and play the piano, absorbing easily his mothers keyboard skills. By high school, the piano was the focus of his after-school life, and for inspiration he would listen to ragtime pianists Hank Wells and Hube Hanna. At eighteen, the small, wiry, pale Carmichael was living in Indianapolis, trying to help his familys income working in manual jobs in construction, a bicycle chain factory, and a slaughterhouse. The bleak time was partly spelled by four-handed piano duets with his mother and by his strong friendship with Reg DuValle, black bandleader and pianist known as "the elder statesman of Indiana jazz" and "the Rhythm King", who taught him piano jazz improvization.

The death of his three year old sister in 1918 affected him deeply and he wrote "My sister Joanne—the victim of poverty. We couldnt afford a good doctor or good attention, and thats when I vowed I would never be broke again in my lifetime." She may have died from influenza, which had swept the world that year. Carmichael earned his first money ($5.00) as a musician playing at a fraternity dance that year and began his musical career.

Carmichael attended Indiana University and the Indiana University School of Law, where he received his Bachelors degree in 1925 and a law degree in 1926. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and played the piano all around the state with his "Collegians" to support his studies. He met, befriended, and played with Bix Beiderbecke, the great cornetist (and sometime pianist) and fellow Mid-westerner. Under Beiderbeckes spell, Carmichael started to play the cornet as well, but found that he didnt have the lips for it, and only played it for a short while. He was also influenced by Beiderbeckes impressionistic and classical musical ideas. On a visit to Chicago, Carmichael was introduced by Beiderbecke to Louis Armstrong, who was then playing with King Olivers Creole Jazz Band, and with whom he would collaborate later.

He began to compose songs, "Washboard Blues" and "Boneyard Shuffle" for Curtis Hitch, and also "Riverboat Shuffle", recorded by Beiderbecke, which became a staple of "white" jazz and Carmichaels first recorded song. After graduating in 1926, he moved to Miami to join a local law firm but failing the bar exam returned to Indiana in 1927. He joined an Indiana law firm and passed the state bar, but devoted most of his energies to music, arranging band dates, and "writing tunes".[8] He had discovered his method of songwriting, which he described later "You dont write melodies, you find them...If you find the beginning of a good song, and if your fingers do not stray, the melody should come out of hiding in a short time."

<title>Dixieland Crackerjacks - Shine</title>

Shine was a Louis Armstrong favourite in the 1930s. Now performed by the Dixieland Crackerjacks.
 //-dixielandcrackerjacks
With Lielian Tan - drums, Bart Tuinman - sousaphone, Johan Molenveld - banjo, Koos Zwagerman - trumpet and Bert Brandsma - alto saxophone.
The Dixieland Crackerjacks Supersize Orchestra made its debut in the year of 2000. Initially it was asked to play just one gig with music in the tradition of the big brass bands from New Orleans. The invitation came from the organisers of the Cycling contest Tour of Holland. The musicians of the band liked it that much that they decided to try to get more work with this enlarged orchestra so some pictures were taken and sent around to spread the news. Two trumpets, two trombones, three saxes and three rhythm made up this ensemble. Since then the band plays several times a year at various events.

Despite the many musicians involved the music is only from head arrangements. No charts or scores are used, to give the band members as much freedom as possible. This results in a most spontaneous kind of music, as much a pleasure for the audience to listen to as for the participants to play it.

In the beginning the band played with 10 musicians, for the Jazz festival in Kiel a Grand Marshall was added and in the year 2005 the band was further enlarged to 12, when the rhythm section was strengthened by using both snare and bass drums.

"The Sheik of Araby" is a song that was written by Harry Smith, Francis Wheeler and music by Ted Snyder in 1921. It was composed in response to the popularity of the Rudolph Valentino film The Sheik.

It was a Tin Pan Alley hit, and was also adopted by early jazz bands, especially in New Orleans, making it a jazz standard. It was a well recognized part of popular culture, for example mentioned in the book the The Great Gatsby.

The "Araby" in the title refers to Arabia or the Arabian Peninsula. The town of Arabi, Louisiana, a small municipality in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, should be noted as some New Orleans jazz bands have a tradition of performing the number as if it refers to that community for humorous effect.

[edit] Notable recordings
Don Alberts band recorded the first version with the chant "With no pants on" between the lines of lyrics. This was and still is a popular bit of hokum with New Orleans bands, but got Alberts record generally banned from radio airplay.

In Heaven Can Wait (1943 film) directed by Ernst Lubitsch, Don Ameche and Gene Tierney attend a musical stage production where The Sheik of Araby is performed.

"Amapola" is a popular song, written by Spanish composer Joseph LaCalle with Spanish lyrics although the English language lyrics were written by Albert Gamse.

Though the song was published in 1924, the most popular recorded version was made nearly two decades later by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with vocalists Helen OConnell and Bob Eberly. The recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 3629. The record first reached the Billboard charts on March 14, 1941 and lasted 14 weeks on the chart, peaking at #1.

An instrumental version of the piece formed an important leitmotif in the gangster film Once Upon a Time in America (1984).

Spanish version

Amapola, lindisima amapola,
Será siempre mi alma tuya sola.
Yo te quiero, amada niña mia,
Igual que ama la flor la luz del día.
Amapola, lindisima amapola,
No seas tan ingrata y ámame.
Amapola, amapola
Cómo puedes tú vivir tan sola.
Yo te quiero, amada niña mía.
Igual que ama la flor la luz del día.
Amapola, lindísima amapola,
No seas tan ingrata y ámame.
Amapola, amapola
Cómo puedes tú vivir tan sola

"Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" is a song which was written by James A. Bland (1854 -- 1911), an African American minstrel who wrote over 700 folk songs. Written in 1878, soon after the American Civil War, when many of the newly freed slaves were struggling to find work, the song has become controversial in modern times.

A slightly reworded version was Virginias state song from 1940 until 1997, using the word "Virginia" instead of "Virginny". In 1997, it was retired on the grounds that the lyrics were considered offensive to African Americans. On January 28, 1997, the Virginia Senate voted to designate "Carry Me Back to Old Virginia" as state song emeritus, and a study committee initiated a contest for writing a new state song. The Virginia General Assembly suspended the contest on January 5, 2000, and recently reinstated it. There are currently eight candidates.

In January 2006, a state Senate panel voted to designate "Shenandoah" as the "interim official state song". On March 1, 2006, the House Rules Committee of the General Assembly voted down bill SB682, which would have made "Shenandoah" the official state song.
Controversy
Bland himself was an educated black man born in Queens, New York and educated at Howard. The song however is written from the perspective of a seemingly nostalgic former slave. The controversy over "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" rests on whether or not the song may be intended or interpreted ironically. The ex-slave describes his slavery and his owners in picturesque and ostensibly positive terms.

Defenders of the song argue that this interpretation is too literal, and that "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" articulates and perhaps satirizes the feelings of betrayal and abandonment white Southerners felt after Emancipation. Like minstrel music of the same era, the song was written in dialect, from a black point of view, and expressed the feelings some whites wished blacks to feel; in this case, nostalgia for days of slavery. Others argue the song was written to express difficulties and discrimination facing free blacks in the north which perhaps were bitter enough to make slavery an ironically appealing contrast. These defenders argue that minstrels songs were never written to me be taken literally but were sly and humorous. The slightly less explicit "Old Folks at Home", still the state song of Florida with important modifications, carries a similar message.

[edit] Covers
Ray Charles covered "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" on his full covered release "Sings for America".

Jerry Lee Lewis also recorded this song in 1963, his final offer at Sun Records. In early 1957 he also recorded Blands Hand Me Down My Walking Cane.

Lyrics
Carry me back to old Virginny. (Original version.)
Theres where the cotton and corn and taters grow.
Theres where the birds warble sweet in the spring-time.
Theres where this old darkeys heart am longd to go.

Theres where I labored so hard for old Massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn;
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginny, the state where I was born.

Carry me back to old Virginny.
Theres where the cotton and the corn and taters grow;
Theres where the birds warble sweet in the spring-time.
Theres where this old darkeys heart am longd to go.

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There let me live till I wither and decay.
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered,
Theres where this old darkeys life will pass away.

Massa and Missis have long since gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore.
There well be happy and free from all sorrow,
Theres where well meet and well never part no more.

Carry me back to old Virginny.
Theres where the cotton and the corn and taters grow;
Theres where the birds warble sweet in the spring-time.
Theres where this old darkeys heart am longd to go.

Royal Garden Blues played by the Dixieland Crackerjacks. April 9. 2007 at Attractiepark Slagharen. With Michel Muller, Selena Kuiper, Koos Greven, Bert Brandsma.
The Dixieland Crackerjacks concert band is the most direct link to how it all started in 1994. Usually with six musicians, occasionally with added guest soloists.
This setting is used during concerts at musical festivals, in theatres, at dances or when easy listening music is required.

The band did play at numerous Jazz festivals and in Jazz clubs throughout western Europe. Some of the highlights include longer international tours visiting festivals in Germany, (Dresden, Stuttgart, Cologne and many other cities) France, Belgium and England. (Birmingham Jazz Festival 1999). The music is introduced with some additional information about composers and original recordings. Every band member has a solo piece to show his/her individual musical capacities.
In recent times, the band is often asked to play at events in specific thematic settings, like Charleston, Cotton-Club, or Roaring-Twenties parties.
Sometimes the band is asked to play just easy listening. The Crackerjacks gained a good reputation at playing the right dynamics.

Through the years, a large and most varied band book has been built consisting of the highlights from the early jazz period, with additional own compositions and some sidesteps to other musical styles like Latin or Rock n Roll.

Original Dixieland One Step- Dutch Swing College 1988

The best of the best!
Yes folks, I had not seen this clip for a few years and a friend from the Netherlands just send me this film in a much better picture quality then the one I had before.
This is the Dutch Swing College Band at the top of their glorious career in 1988. Peter Schilperoort started this band in 1945 and today in 2007 they are stilll going strong.
But to me this was the ultimate band in 1988. Peters health would deteriorate and after his death in 1990 most of the members quit and new personnel had to be found.
At a TV broadcast for the Sud Deutsche Rundfunk they played a fabulous concert and here we see and hear a tune which was also the very first recording by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917.
Now some 71 years later this Original Dixieland One Step is played with great sophistication by this fabulous band from Holland.

During the mid to late 1950s Eydie Gorme with the help of arranger and producer Don Costa put out a series of flawless albums for ABC Paramount. "Eydie In Dixie-land" from 1959 is one of my favorites. Ive selected 3 of my favorite tracks from the album. Enjoy! And as the liner notes say "A warm breeze is blowing from the South, carrying with it the exciting voice of Eydie in Dixie-land."

House Rent Rag - Johnny Dodds and the Dixieland Jug Blowers. 1926
Even though today some 6 tracks of Johnny Dodds and the Jug Blowers are available on CD, this track is probably the most obscure one, but also one of the swingiest.

The Dixieland Jug Blowers were a popular American musical group of the 1920s. While being a Jug band, the group is often classified as a Jazz band due to its set up which while including regular Jug band instruments such as Jug, Banjo, Guitar and violin, it also used alto saxophone, trombone, piano and even the famous Johnny Dodds on clarinet. This wide variety of instrumentation caused the Dixieland Jug Blowers to become the most sophisticated of its time and influenced many other Jug bands of the time.
