For your G harp Harp students sometimes get obsessed with which note next to play. This riff-before-the-rhythm approach takes the energy out of their music. It turns the joy of harp playing into cerebral frustration, and creates flat-footed uninspired solos. Instead of wailing their souls on stage, they are up on stage thinking, "ok, that was the I chord, wheres the IV chord, what note do I play, wheres everybody gooing?" Rejoice, an easy solution is at hand! As long as you follow basic guide lines, it does not really matter that much which note you play next. Almost all the notes will work. Especially 1d 2d 3d* 4d 5d 6b 6d etc. Almost all notes can be milked for meaning. What matters much more is your phrasing and percussion. What matters more is how you articulate the note. What matters more is when you play and end the note. But whether that note is 2d or 3d* or 2d** -- thats not that big a deal. They are all available, like a smorgasboard of harmonizing sound. Just remember, the 2 draw, the root note, the tonic center, thats most important. Master it tonewise, bending and percussive. Learn the pull-off, the vibratto, the bent throat wiggle. OK. Lets back up. Feeling the beat, intensly is step one. Now comes Breathing and single note tone on the 2 draw. Now comes articulation, the action you use to initiate, break up, and shape the note. //-Gindick/bending_tone.asp Throat articulation is the key to both tone and percusion. Like some bizzarre language of clicks and clacks, gaws and goos inside the throat, Blues Harp requires that you engage your deep larynx in musical expression. As yesterdays phone student said, in amazement, "You need to train your throat." He had been playing years, and was realizing it for the first time. Just like you dont want your spoken words to be muddy or unclear, you want your articluation to be powerful, and crisp, at times, aggressive. At the heart of the music is the rhythm you feel, and the sounds and silence you make over that rythm. The "K" consonate as you inhale is an example of correct articulation. If you draw 2, and go ka ka ka, and you have good single note, you will be articulating from your throat. Mr. Relative Beginner, your job is to get really good at this throat articulation stuff. Make that throat play drums on your inhaled breath. Then make it play drums on just one hole, hole 2 draw. Then make it play drums using simple riffs, and build into scales, chord progressions. And that is what my new You Tube video is about. Its an excercise that gets you playing your harp like a drum, and teaches you how to use your exhaled "Ha!" as a rhythm point, or a rest. It explains and demonstrates how having a strong one beat exhale is essential to powerful inhale based playing.

What lays out most naturally is a minor key scale, and an easy to play blues style. Hughs playin the chromatic mouth organ for keeps(also a Hohner 10 hole). The technique is more demanding. You can�t do much note bending. You couldnt see the camera from the stage, so there was never that kinda pressure. This jazz and blues club had spent more half a million dollars on the sound/video recording equipment. The recording quality was state of the art in 1995-96. The sound man was a recording engineer. Too bad its location was so poor; it went out of business within 2 years of its opening. You can tell Hughs background studying clarinet counts for a lot. In learning to play the harmonica, Hugh transcribed a number of the instruments masters solos ...thats why hes got ears like deers. Hes more than just a 30 year veteran of the music scene. Hes got a deeper background than most harp players __wherever youre making the comparison from. Blues harp/harmonica lesson learn to play super/ultra fast improvised solo by James H Graff cupping (for wah-wah, talking effect) blowing, drawing and bending a Brad Harrison Limited Edition Custom Marine Band "straight" into a vocal mic - ala Jason Ricci (Jason recommended Brad Harrison) using a few special harmonica techniques for instance - using only mouth and tongue (no diaphram or lungs working) to draw air into and out of his mouth for the very fastest, upper range/register (holes 6 through 10) "cadenza" ("an elaborate flourish or showy solo passage, sometimes improvised, introduced near the end of an aria or a movement of a concerto.") Part one Almost every harp player I have heard play over this song, misses the half step changes. The change dont require overblows and I demonstrate how it can be done using only simple bends. This candid video was shot from the audience in performance and shows the use of chromatic harmonic feedback for the blues harp which can extend its upper range by between one and two octaves. Ideal for improvisation and playing atonally, with care, it can also be used harmonically, such as in Fantah-C in B-Minor on the Memoirs of a Mouth Organ CD. The technique was pioneered and developed as part of a commission by the Castlemaine State Festival for Dolce Chamberblues a 45 minute work for blues harmonica and string quartet.

Its a great way to help zero in on the pre-bent notes on holes 3 and 4. Im playing 2D, 3D bent down 1/2 step, 4B, 4D bent down a 1/2 step, 4D, 5D, 6B. To moja druga recenzja video, tym razem przedstawiam harmonijkę Hohner Blues Harp MS w tonacji D. Harmonijka ma szeroko otwarte pokrywy, dzięki czemu jest głośna, zaimpregnowany korpus i dobrze wyregulowane stroiki nadają jej szczelność, a przez to szybkość i łatwość reakcji. Brzmienie jest rasowe, bluesowe, lekko przytłumione. Harmonijka jest trwała, mam ją już od września 2007 roku, a ona gra coraz lepiej. Podsumowując, jest to bardzo dobry instrument w rozsądnej cenie. PS. Dalej nie udało mi się rozwiązać problemu rozminięcia się obrazu z fonią, za co bardzo przepraszam.

Guitar was recorded first in open G or Spanish tuning, then ported over to my Ipod to use as a backing track. I then ad-libbed some harp riffs with a key of C Hohner Special 20 harmonica(Hence the earphones) and recorded the video, then re-synched the backing track I was listening to with the harp bit, adjusted levels, and voila. Cheers!

I use a Suzuki MR350 blues harp in key of C in this video.I have just narrowed the gaps (both blow reed and draw reed) on holes 7-10.Youd better do it very carefully.Then you can try your first overdraw by drawing just with the air in your mouth.Once you make it,you can then get real overdrawing.Its very difficult for me to overdraw on out-of-box blues harps.You may also try overdraw on Marine Band Deluxe,just narrow the gaps a little before you overdraw.

I started singing a BB King song in the middle and the words are from a minor blues and really dont fit the chord progression, but hey its good enough for govmint work! Good GAWD! Let me just start out by restating the obvious Reverend Gary Davis was The Man His songs and music instruction has influenced generations of musicians, and will continue to do so for years to come. For those who dont already know, Reverend Gary Davis was an incredible blues pioneer. Like many other powerful Afro-American blues legends of his time, his lack of site did nothing to hamper his inspired musical stylings. Like many other artists of his era in another ways as well, many artists were more successful with their covers of his original songs than he himself was. His students included such masters as Stefan Grossman and Woody Mann, to name just two. I like this tune way too much to not cover it eventually. I had an idea in the back of my head for a while to do a Rev. Gary Davis tune with the concept of a fusion between the Mississippi Delta blues sound and the urban Chicago blues sound, and this is the one I picked. Ive completely changed the arrangement, as well as revising the lyrics a little bit, so Im ready for the purists to burn me at the stake. Cheers all!
