SINK THE BISMARCK ~ sung by Johnny Horton

=====================================
VETERANS HELPING VETERANS

SINK THE BISMARCK

In May of 1941 the war had just begun
The Germans had the biggest ship that had the biggest guns
The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the sea
On her decks were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees

Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship the Hood
And every British seaman he knew and understood
They had to sink the Bismarck the terror of the sea
Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees
Well find the German battleship thats makin such a fuss
We gotta sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us
Yeah hit the decks a runnin boys and spin those guns around
When we find the Bismarck we gotta cut her down
[ ac.guitar ]
The Hood found the Bismarck and on that fatal day
The Bismarck started firing fifteen miles away
We gotta sink the Bismarck was the battle sound
But when the smoke had cleared away the mighty Hood went down
For six long days and weary nights they tried to find her trail
Churchill told the people put every ship asail
Cause somewhere on that ocean I know shes gotta be
We gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea
Well find the German battleship...
[ ac.guitar ]
The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the morning sun
Ten hours away from homeland the Bismarck made its run
The Admiral of the British fleet said turn those bows around
We found that German battleship and were gonna cut her down
The British guns were aimed and the shells were coming fast
The first shell hit the Bismarck they knew she couldnt last
That mighty German battleship is just a memory
Sink the Bismarck was the battle cry that shook the seven seas
We found the German battleship twas makin such a fuss
We had to sink the Bismarck cause the world depends on us
We hit the deck a runnin and we and spun those guns around
Yeah we found the mighty Bismarck and then we cut her down
We found the German battleship...

INTRODUCTION
"Bismarck" is filmed using Silent Hunter 3 PC Game. It
tells the famous story of KMS Bismarck and a visual account of major stages in Operation Rheinubung.

THANKS
I would like to thank the Subsim community and mod
makers who made and already great looking game even
better. Mods Ive used are listed in the end of the movie.
CCIP Camera Mod deserves a special mention because it
allows for very nice shots that give a true sense of scale
when necessary.

PRODUCTION
Ive used SH3s mission editor to recreate every episode
shown in the movie down to the minute, in order to make it
look as accurately as possible, though of course I dont
think its realistic to get all things correctly. The following
moments are shown

- Leaving of Gdynia port
- Bismarck, Prinz Eugen and convoy ships and mine
sweepers off the island of Rugen
- The Great Belt and sighting of Bismarck squadron by
Swedish aircraft carrying cruiser Goetland
- Bergen fjord station
- Arctic Circle Navigation, first shots in anger at a
shadowing British cruiser
- The Battle of Denmark Strait
- The separation of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen
- Swordfish attack
- The Sinking of Bismarck

For video recording Ive used Fraps 1.9D for better frame
rates (even though my machine is not very powerful, so
sometimes you get some frame rate drops - sorry..);
Adobe Premier Pro 7.0 for video editing and post
production effects; Jet Audio 6 for sound recordings.

SOUND
Ive used the music as soundtrack by Howard Shore from
the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hans Zimmerman from
Gladiator, plus some stock game sounds.

RESEARCH
First and foremost, //-bismarck-class.dk/ was the
website Ive used extensively for the movie. From events
listed, down to paint schemes, it was most useful. I painted
Bismarck, Prinz Eugen and Home Fleet warships myself,
in order to get them to look more close to the real life
counterparts.

HISTORY
Bismarck was meant to break into the Atlantic and raid
commerce shipping lines. She put to see on May 18th,
1941 and travelled through the Great Belt (Denmark) and
into Norway - where after being repainted (swastika signs
covered and Baltic camouflage painted over), together
with Prinz Eugen - went to the Atlantic taking the northern
route through the Denmark Strait between Iceland and
Greenland. The Home Fleet command were aware of
those plans, and after being alarmed by Swedish aircraft
carrying cruiser Goetland, the chase had begun. On May
24th, HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales supported by
cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk attacked Bismarck and Prinz
Eugen in the early hours and in foggy conditions. The
battle was short, and resulted in HMS Hood being blown
up by one of Bismarcks salvos, resulting in a great loss of
life and made the matter of destroying Bismarck all that
more important for the British command. Having sustained
damage in the Battle of Denmark Strait, Bismarck was
forced to let Prinz Eugen go while she tried to out manoeuvre
her pursuers. On May 26th, she received what many
consider a fatal hit, when the torpedo explosion jammed
her rudder, making her hard to steer. On the
morning of the 27th, the British battleships have caught up
and sunk Bismarck in a battle that lasted 2 hours and also
resulted in big crew losses of Bismarck. Operation
Rheinubung failed and the role of hunting down convoys
was left primarily for the U-boats.

The Japanese high command decided to transfer about 105,000 troops from China and Japan to Lae in New Guinea to reinforce their forces there. The convoy, moving at a top speed of seven knots, was not detected for several days because of two tropical storms which struck the Solomon and Bismarck Seas between February 27 and March 1. However, at about 15 00 on March 1 the crew of a patrolling B-24 Liberator bomber spotted the convoy north of Cape Hollman. U.S. heavy bombers were sent to the location but failed to locate the convoy.

At about 10 00 on March 2, another Liberator found the convoy, and clear skies allowed several flights of U.S. B-17 Flying Fortress bombers to attack and sink up to three merchant ships, including the Kyokusei Maru. A B-17 was seriously damaged by a New Britain-based Mitsubishi Zero fighter, and the crew was forced to take to their parachutes. The Japanese pilot machine-gunned some of the B-17 crew members as they descended and attacked others in the water after they landed.

Out of 1,500 troops being transported by the Kyokusei Maru, 800 were rescued from the water by the destroyers Yukikaze and Asagumo. These two destroyers, being faster than the convoy since its speed was dictated by the slower transports, broke away from the group to disembark the survivors at Lae. The destroyers resumed their escort duties the next day. The convoy, without the troop transport and two destroyers, was attacked again on the evening of March 2, with one transport sustaining minor damage.

PBY Catalina flying boats from No. 11 Squadron RAAF continued to trail and occasionally bomb the convoy over the night of March 2, and at about 03 25 on March 3, when the convoy was within range of the air base at Milne Bay, Bristol Beaufort torpedo bombers from No. 100 Squadron RAAF took off. However, because of bad weather only two Beauforts found the convoy, and neither scored any hits.

The convoy was rounding the Huon Peninsula, bringing it into clearer conditions. A force of 90 Allied aircraft took off from Port Moresby and headed for Cape Ward Hunt; simultaneously 22 RAAF Douglas Bostons set off to attack the Japanese fighter base at Lae, reducing the convoys air cover. Attacks on the base continued throughout the day.

At 10 00, 13 B-17s reached the convoy and bombed from medium altitude, causing the ships to disperse and prolonging the journey.

Then 13 Bristol Beaufighters from No. 30 Squadron RAAF approached at low level, to give the impression they were Beauforts making another torpedo attack. The ships turned to face them, and the Beaufighters were then able to inflict maximum damage on the ships anti-aircraft guns, bridges and crews, during strafing runs with their four 20 mm (0.787 in) nose cannons and six wing-mounted .303 in (7.7 mm) machine guns.

Immediately afterwards, 13 USAAF Mitchells bombed from about 750 meters (2,500 ft). Then 12 Mitchells made a "skip bombing" attack, reportedly claiming 17 hits. By this time half of the transport ships were sunk or sinking. As the Beaufighters and Mitchells expended their munitions, some USAAF A-20s joined the attack. Another five hits were claimed by B-17s from higher altitudes.

While the attack on the ships proceeded, 28 U.S. P-38 Lightnings provided top cover, and 20 Japanese fighters were shot down for the loss of three Lightnings. Two were from the 39th Fighter Squadron the aces Bob Faurot and Hoyt Eason were both killed in action. During the afternoon, further attacks from Mitchells and RAAF Bostons followed.

All seven of the remaining transports were sunk about 100 kilometres (60 mi) southeast of Finschhafen, along with the destroyers Shirayuki, Arashio, and Tokitsukaze. Four of the destroyers picked up as many survivors as possible and then retired to Rabaul. The fifth destroyer, Asagumo, was sunk in a subsequent strike as it was picking up survivors from the Arashio.

Following orders from Kenney, reportedly in retaliation for the shot-down bomber crew being machine-gunned as they descended, from the evening of March 3 until March 5, Allied patrol boats and planes attacked Japanese rescue vessels, as well as survivors from the sunken vessels on life rafts and swimming or floating in the sea.

Aftermath
The battle was a disaster for the Japanese. Out of 6,900 troops who were badly needed in New Guinea, only about 800 made it to Lae. The Australian War Memorial states that 2,890 Japanese soldiers and sailors were killed.

"A merciful providence guarded us in this great victory," said Douglas MacArthur in one of his communiqués. He used the victory to request five additional U.S. divisions and 1,800 aircraft in preparation for his landings in northern New Guinea.

 - Stapellauf 14.02.1939
- Indienststellung 24.08.1940
- Verbleib gesunken, 27.05.1941
- Werft Blohm & Voss, Hamburg
- Hauptbewaffnung 8 x 38 cm - 12 x 15 cm - 16 x 10,5 cm - 16 x 3,7 cm - 6 Flugzeuge
- Baukosten 197 Millionen Reichsmark
- Besatzungsstärke ca.2220

41700 ts - 251 m lang - 36 m breit - max. 30,8 Knoten

Attention We found errors in spelling and some other adjustment were needed so, this version is not the corrected Video,
we are uploading the New Correct version,
Thanks FORCE H
This song took approximately two months to write and record. Coincidentally it was finished on May 27th 2004...
63 years to the day, that BISMARCK was sunk by the Royal Navy.
We dedicate this song to the courageous crew of H.M.S. HOOD and to "Those in peril on the sea.
"During the battle for Naval supremacy of the North Atlantic,
The HOOD was destroyed by the BISMARCK and over 1400 men gave their lives that fateful day, only three crew members survived.
This song was inspired by the 1960 movie "Sink the Bismarck".
What we have attempted to do, is encapsulate the essence of the movie in just 7 minutes 24 seconds - To achieve this ambitious goal, we have used about two minutes of various sound bytes from the actual movie. Around these sound bytes we have woven about five minutes of original lyrics.
The song is part "Broadway Show",
"Part War Movie",
with a dash of "Spaghetti Western" thrown in for good measure.
Paul & Stephen

The Bismarck- Decisive battles 1of 5

Although the German battleship had avoided many British patrols and was only 670 miles northwest of Brest, she was still far from the safety of German Air Force (Luftwaffe) air cover. Still, it would prove difficult for the Royal Navy to catch Bismarck, as the British Battle Squadron was too far north. Fortunately for the British, the aircraft carrier Ark Royal in Force H from Gibraltar found herself southeast of Bismarcks reported location and directly in the path to Brest. Upon acknowledging the contact report, cruiser Sheffield was detached from Force H and ordered to find and shadow the enemy. Later that day, naval observer Lieutenant James E. Johnson in a British Catalina from No. 240 Squadron, relieved Smiths plane and maintained contact with the German battleship until Sheffield took up a shadowing position.
Following an abortive air strike that afternoon in which fourteen Swordfish mistakenly attacked (but missed) Sheffield, a second strike of fifteen Swordfish took off from Ark Royal at 1910 that evening. Over the next hour or so, in conditions of low clouds, strong winds, and fading daylight, the aircraft released thirteen torpedoes in a series of attacks against the German battleship. While the poor weather made these attacks difficult, it also threw off the aim of the German antiaircraft gunners, and no planes were lost. Two torpedoes struck Bismarck, one with little effect, but the other wrecked her steering gear and jammed the rudder. This lucky blow sealed her fate. Slowed to a crawl by the damage, Bismarck could no longer escape her converging pursuers.
After midnight on the 27th, one Polish and four British destroyers closed the range and made multiple torpedo attacks on Bismarck. A few hours after dawn, the British heavy warships steamed into view, and battleships King George V and Rodney engaged Bismarck at a range of 16,000 yards. German gunnery was inaccurate, probably owing to crew exhaustion, and after an hour and a half Bismarck was reduced to a blazing shambles. Torpedoed twice more, and eventually scuttled by her surviving crew, the German battleship sank some 300 nautical miles west of Ushant, France. Only 110 of her crew of 2,222 survived the sinking.

Wow two 15 shells were enough to sink the mighty Musashi?? Is that possible?
Musashi has 5500 hit points and bismarck has only 800?!?
Is that 2 lucky shot??
First hit in the engine side and second hit above the ammunition storage?
We will see in other videos whos the real Fighter
