Bill Murphy Jr. visits Googles Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "In a Time of War The Proud and Perilous Journey of West Points Class of 2002." This event took place on November 20, 2008, as part of the AuthorsmanitaGoogle series.

They came to West Point in a time of peace, but soon after the start of their senior year, their lives were transformed by September 11. In a Time of War focuses on two members of the class of 2002 Todd Bryant, an amiable, funny Californian for whom military service was a family tradition; and Drew Sloan, the hardworking son of liberal parents from Arkansas who is determined to serve his country. On the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, Todd, Drew, and their classmates—the armys newest and youngest officers—lead their troops into harms way again and again.

Meticulously reported, sweeping in scope, Bill Murphy Jr.s powerful book follows these brave and idealistic officers—and their families—as they experience the harrowing reality of the modern battlefield. In a Time of War tells a vivid and sometimes heartbreaking story about courage, honor, and what war really means to the soldiers whose lives it defines. More at //-inatimeofwar

The Authors at Google program was pleased to welcome former U.N. advisers to Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani and Clare Lockhart to discuss their latest book, "Fixing Failed States A Framework for Rebuilding our Fractured World."

Ashraf Ghani played a central role in the design and implementation of the post-Taliban settlement in Afghanistan, serving as UN adviser to the Bonn process and as Finance Minister during Afghanistans Transitional Administration. He has worked at the World Bank and taught at Johns Hopkins and Berkeley universities. He has been nominated for the job of Secretary General of the United Nations and considered for the job of President of the World Bank. He chairs the Institute for State Effectiveness.

Clare Lockhart is Director for the Institute for State Effectiveness. She has worked for the World Bank, the United Nations and advised the Government of Afghanistan government in Kabul on its strategy and programs from 2002 to 2005. She advises countries and international organizations on state-building and has written widely on the topic. -effectivestates

In Fixing Failed States, the authors describe the effort to save failed states--vividly and convincingly--offering an on-the-ground picture of why past efforts have not worked and advancing a groundbreaking new solution to this most pressing of global crises. Military force, while certainly necessary on occasion, cannot solve the fundamental problems, and humanitarian interventions cost billions yet do not leave capable states in their wake. Ghani and Lockhart argue that only an integrated state-building approach can heal these failing countries. As they explain, many of these countries already have the resources they need, if only we knew how to connect them to global knowledge and put them to work in the right way. Their state-building strategy, which assigns responsibility equally among the international community, national leaders, and citizens, maps out a clear path to political and economic stability.

This event took place on June 20, 2008 at Googles New York office.

The AuthorsmanitaGoogle program was pleased to welcome writer and novelist Porochista Khakpour to Googles New York office to discuss her debut book, "Sons and Other Flammable Objects".

Porochista Khakpour was born in Tehran in 1978 and raised in Los Angeles. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA from The Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Chicago Reader, Paper, Flaunt, Nylon, and Bidoun, among many others.
Her debut novel "Sons and Other Flammable Objects" received much acclaim from The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, among others. It won the 77th Annual California Book Award in "First Fiction," and was a Chicago Tribune "Falls Best" selection and a New York Times "Editors Choice."

Khakpour builds her luminously intelligent debut around the travails of an Iranian-American family caught in the feverish and paranoid currents immediately after 9/11. Darius Adam and his wife, Laleh, flee revolutionary Iran for the alien territory of Southern California, settling in an apartment complex with the allegorically enticing name of Eden Gardens. Son Xerxes grows up with psychological dual citizenship regular American outside of Eden Gardens, but the son of bitter Darius and clueless Lala inside. Xerxes finds true paradise in watching Barbara Eden, the star of I Dream of Jeannie.
Against this background of a parody paradise, Khakpour plays out the events following 9/11, which will, grotesquely, unite the Adam family. By then Xerxes, 26, is an unemployed college grad in a New York airshaft-view apartment, as far from Eden Gardens as possible.
Khakpour is an elegant writer, and she imparts a perfect sense of the ironies of being Persian in America, where the blurry collective image of the Middle East alternates between blonde genies in bottles and furrow-browed terrorists in cockpits.

Thid event took place on June 24, 2008.

Since 2004 he has been Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research, New York, but also continues as a part-time Professor at Eskotu. In addition, he has held visiting professorships at Nijmegen (1997), the Universities of Sydney (2000), Notre Dame (2002), Cardozo Law School in New York (2005), and Oslo (2006).

On Humour is a fascinating and beautifully written book on what philosophy can tell us about humor and about what it is to be human. Simon Critchley probes some of the most perennial features of humor, such as our tendency to laugh at animals and our bodies, why we mock death with comedy and why we think its funny when people start to act like machines. He also looks as the darker side of humor, as when rife with kotuism and racism, and shows how humor might remind us of people we would rather not be. Above all, Simon Critchley argues that humor can tell us much about the human condition, the meaning of life and why comedy itself begins in philosophy.

This event took place on May 14, 2008.

AuthorsmanitaGoogle Ginger Strand

The AuthorsmanitaGoogle program was pleased to welcome author Ginger Strand to Googles NY office to discuss her new book "Inventing Niagra".

Ginger Strand grew up in Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan, but mostly on a farm in Michigan. She has published essays and fiction in many places, including Harpers, The Believer, The Iowa Review, The Gettysburg Review, Swink, Raritan, The New England Review, and Orion, where she is a contributing editor. A former fellow in the Behrman Center for the Humanities at Princeton, she has received residency grants from The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the American Antiquarian Society, as well as a Tennessee Williams scholarship in fiction from the Sewanee Writers Conference. She lives in New York City.

"Niagara Falls is where America discovered the sublime. And Ginger Strand has discovered everything that happened since. If you want to understand our relationship with the natural world, you better read this book."
Americans call Niagara Falls a natural wonder, but the Falls arent very natural anymore. In fact, they are a study in artifice. Water diverted, riverbed reshaped, brink stabilized and landscape redesigned, the Falls are more a monument to mans meddling than to natures strength. Held up as an example of something real, they are hemmed in with fakery -- waxworks, haunted houses, IMAX films and ersatz Indian tales. A symbol of American manifest destiny, they are shared politely with Canada. Emblem of natures power, they are completely human-controlled. Archetype of natural beauty, they belie an ugly environmental legacy still bubbling up from below. On every level, Niagara Falls is a monument to how America falsifies nature, reshaping its contours and redirecting its force while claiming to submit to its will.
Combining history, reportage and personal narrative, Inventing Niagara traces Niagaras journey from sublime icon to engineering marvel to camp spectacle. Along the way, Ginger Strand uncovers the hidden history of Americas waterfall the Mohawk chief who wrested the Falls from his adopted tribe, the revered town father who secretly assisted slave catchers, the wartime workers who unknowingly helped build the Bomb and the building contractor who bought and sold a pharaoh. With an uncanny ability to zero in on the buried truth, Strand introduces us to underwater dams, freaks of nature, mythical maidens and 280,000 radioactive mice buried at Niagara.

AuthorsmanitaGoogle Mario Batali

The AuthorsmanitaGoogle program was thrilled to welcome acclaimed chef, restaurateur, Food Network personality and author Mario Batali to Googles New York office to discuss his new book, "Italian Grill".

Raised in Seattle, Marios initial career path had him studying the golden age of Spanish theater at Rutgers University. Soon after graduating he took his first bit of culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in London, from which he withdrew almost immediately due to a "lack of interest." An apprenticeship with Londons legendary chef Marco Pierre White and three years of intense culinary training in the Northern Italian Village of Borgo Capanne, (population 200) gave him the essential skills and knowledge to return to his native US, anxious to plant his orange-clogged foot firmly in the behinds of the checkered tablecloth-Italian restaurant establishment.

Among his many accolades, Mario was named "Man of the Year" in the chef category by GQ Magazine in 1999. In 2002, he won the James Beard Foundations "Best Chef New York City" award and in 2005 the James Beard Foundation awarded Mario "Outstanding Chef of the Year." Mario is also one of the recipients of the 2001 DArtagnan Cervena Whos Who of Food & Beverage in America, a prestigious lifetime achievement award.

Mario Batali has created a thriving restaurant empire and has established himself as a top restaurateur. Together with his partner Joe Bastianich, he operates seven New York City hotspots, including Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca and Del Posto - two wildly successful restaurants that have each been awarded three stars by Frank Bruni of the New York Times. Mario is also the chef/owner of five other successful restaurants in New York City. Lupa Osteria Romana, Esca, Casa Mono, Bar Jamon, and Otto Enoteca Pizzeria.

From Mario Batali, superstar chef and author of Molto Italiano, comes the ultimate handbook on Italian grilling, which will become an instant must-have cookbook for home grillers.

Easy to use and filled with simple recipes, Mario Batalis new grilling handbook takes the mystery out of making tasty, simple, smoky Italian food. In addition to the eighty recipes and the sixty full-color photographs, Italian Grill includes helpful information on different heat-source options, grilling techniques, and essential equipment. As in Molto Italiano, Batalis distinctive voice provides a historical and cultural perspective as well.

"Italian Grill" features appetizers; pizza and flatbreads; fish and shellfish; poultry; meat; and vegetables. The delicious recipes include Fennel with Sambuca and Grapefruit; Guinea Hen Breasts with Rosemary and Pesto; Baby Octopus with Gigante Beans and Olive-Orange Vinaigrette; and Rosticciana, Italian-Style Ribs.

This event took place on May 30, 2008.

The AuthorsmanitaGoogle program was thrilled to welcome acclaimed photograper and author Robert Zuckerman to the Google NY office to discuss his book "Kindsight".

Known for his work doing photography for motion pictures, Zuckermans imagery has appeared in advertising and publicity for such films as The Crow, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Any Given Sunday, Training Day, Terminator 3, Bad Boys 2 and National Treasure and for such television shows as "The Shield" and "Nip/Tuck." He has also photographed campaigns for United Way and City of Hope. Through the years he has photographed numerous family portraits, weddings, pregnancy pictures and other human celebrations for people of all walks of life, from top celebrities to inner city residents to AIDS patients and others among the less fortunate. A graduate of UC Berkeley and The American Film Institute, Zuckerman co-produced the groundbreaking, award winning Video from Russia The People Speak (1984, directed by Dimitri Devyatkin) which ran on ABC and then on A&E for three years, and he directed and produced the New York City portion of the official "Hands Across America" video in 1986.

"For me, photography as much as possible has become an integration of life and craft. Through it I am able to give value to peoples lives and derive value in my own life, beyond making a living," says Zuckerman. In his book the unusual and frank photos celebrate the beauty of random human encounters and turn everyday life experiences into profound visual testaments.

Kindsight is a collection of photographs and accompanying texts by Zuckerman illuminating the richness of everyday life encounters and experiences. From taxi and bus drivers to waitresses, plumbers and kids at a playground, Kindsight shows the extraordinary within the ordinary. As one reader-viewer states, these pieces "see something in everything." The book includes texts by Will Smith, Debra Winger and Michael Lally, among others. Kindsight has Been Awarded Honorable Mention in the 2005 International Photography Awards (IPA Lucie) in the Book - Professional/People category

In 2006, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. "Lasting peace can not be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights."

In his new book, Professor Yunus describes the role of business in promoting social reform and his vision for an innovative business model that would combine the power of free markets with a quest for a more humane, egalitarian world that could help alleviate world poverty, inequality, and other social problems.

The AuthorsmanitaGoogle program was happy to welcome Muhammad Yunus to speak at the Google NYC campus on January 10, 2008
