Police detain, beat Associated Press reporter in Vietnam New York, September 19, 2008—The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the actions of Vietnamese police who assaulted Associated Press reporter Ben Stocking, after detaining him in Hanoi today. Police detained Stocking, APs Hanoi bureau chief, while he was covering a Catholic protest. Anonymous video footage posted on YouTube shows two men obstructing Stocking as he tries to photograph a prayer vigil, which was staged in protest against city development of land claimed by the church. The men, one of whom wears a uniform, then lead the obviously unwilling journalist from the scene. The footage does not show the rest of the incident described in the report. This brutal police treatment of a working journalist is completely unwarranted, said Joel Simon, CPJs executive director. Journalists should be free to report civil unrest in Vietnam without fear of violence from the authorities. In the AP story, Stocking says police confiscated his camera then punched and kicked him when he asked for it back. He also says they hit him in the head with his camera when he reached for it at the police station where he was later taken for questioning, opening a wound which required four stitches. The AP said it will protest the incident and that the U.S. Embassy had filed a formal protest. Stocking was allowed to leave police custody with an embassy official to seek medical treatment, the report said. It was not clear whether police obstructed other reporters at the protest site.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama selected Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware late Friday night to be his vice presidential running mate, according to a Democratic official, balancing his ticket with an older congressional veteran well-versed in foreign and defense issues. Biden, who has twice sought the White House, is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator. The Democratic National Convention meets next week in Denver to hand Obama his long-sought presidential nomination, and then confirm Biden. Biden slowly emerged as Obamas choice across a long day and night of political suspense as other contenders gradually fell away. First Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine let it be known that he had been ruled out. Then came word that Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana had also been passed over. Several aides to former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton — who was Obamas closest rival for the presidential nomination — said they believed she also was out of contention. They added the Obama campaign had never requested financial or other records from her. Despite passing over Clinton, Obama has gone to great lengths to gain the confidence of her primary voters, agreeing to allow her name to be placed in nomination and permitting a roll call vote. Algerians massively seek to migrate The Associated PressPublished December 3, 200 ALGIERS, Algeria Nearly half of Algerias young men want to migrate illegally to Europe, a poll published Wednesday suggests, illustrating the social unease of this North African nation. The poll, published by the independent daily Liberte, showed that 49.5 percent of Algerian men aged 15 to 34 wanted to immigrate illegally in countries such as Britain. Half of these said they were "certain" theyd try to leave. The second half said it was "likely" they would attempt to reach Europe, despite the risks linked to crossing the Mediterranean Sea in a flimsy boat. ore than 80 percent of those wanting out cited "fleeing the country" and "building a future" as their motive to migrate, the newspaper said. It reported that four out of five Algerians knew of someone who had already left without the required passports or visas, or was soon planning to do so. University graduates were more likely to want to leave than those lacking education, the poll found. The poll was conducted in early November by two experts who previously worked for the National Office of Statistics. It was based on face-to-face interviews with 1,364 young men across 14 regions that make up Algerias Mediterranean coastline — the most populous zone in the country. No margin of error was given, but it would be plus or minus three percentage points for a poll of that size. Most respondents said Britain would be their favorite final destination because, they claimed, residence permits are easiest to get there. Illegal emigration, know in Algeria as "harraga," has become a national issue in recent years, with near-daily reports of boats leaving for nearby Spain or Italy carrying illegal immigrants. Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika even appealed to the countrys youth not to leave their homeland during a national address last month. There are no exact figures of how many people migrate illegally from Africa to Europe, but tens of thousands are thought to attempt the journey each year. Most observers consider the trend to be on the rise, but the poll published Wednesday was one of the first to try to quantify the phenomenon. "We wanted to show how big of a social problem it has become," Libertes editor, Salim Tamani, said by telephone. He said the poll also highlights how Europes tougher new anti-immigration policies backfired by creating a need to migrate illegally. Officials at Algerias Ministry of Solidarity, which follows social affairs, declined to comment. More than 80 percent of those wanting out cited "fleeing the country" and "building a future" as their motive to migrate, the newspaper said. Algeria is used to its citizens leaving legally by airplane for France, its former colonial ruler. But hordes of idle youth — jobless despite the countrys oil and gas wealth — are taking to the high seas in a desperate escape. Jean-Philippe Chauzy, a spokesman for the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration, said the new poll did not distinguish between those who want to leave and those who actually would make the perilous sea journey. However, several crossing points in the Mediterranean have seen a growing influx. The tiny island of Lampedusa off Sicilys coast, for instance, received 12,169 migrants last year and more than 28,000 so far this year, IOM says. OXFORD, Miss (AP) — John McCain accused Barack Obama of compiling the most liberal voting record in the United States Senate Friday night as the two rivals clashed over taxes, spending, the war in Iraq and more in an intense first debate of the White House campaign. Mostly thats just me opposing George Bushs wrong-headed policies, shot back the Democrat. Obama said his Republican rival has been a loyal supporter of the unpopular president, adding that the current economic crisis is a final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by President Bush and supported by Sen. McCain. The two men were polite but pointed as they debated at close quarters for 90 minutes on the University of Mississippi campus. McCain accused his younger rival of an incredible thing of voting to cut off funds for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, a reference to legislation that cleared the Senate more than a year ago. Obama disputed that, saying he had opposed funding in a bill that presented a blank check to the Pentagon while McCain had opposed money in legislation that included a timetable for troop withdrawal. Obama opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2002, before he was a member of Congress, while McCain voted in the Senate to authorize the war. You were wrong on Iraq, Obama repeated three times in succession. John, you like to pretend the war began in 2007. McCain replied that Obama has refused to acknowledge the success of the troop buildup in Iraq that McCain recommended and Bush announced more than a year ago. The two presidential candidates stood behind identical wooden lecterns on stage at the performing arts center at the University of Mississippi for the first of three scheduled debates with less than six weeks remaining until Election Day. The two vice presidential candidates will meet next week for their only debate, and Obama and McCain each put in a plug for his own running mate. The two men were pointed but polite, although at least once McCain sought to depict his rival as naive on foreign policy. That was in response to Obamas statement that it might become necessary to send U.S. troops across the Pakistani border to pursue terrorists. You dont say that out loud, retorted McCain. If you have to do things, you do things. He also criticized Obama for having said he would sit down without precondition with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So let me get this right, we sit down with Ahmadinejad and he says were going to wipe Israel off the face of the earth and we say, no youre not. Oh please, McCain said. McCain jabbed at Obama, who he said has requested millions of dollars in pork barrel spending, including some after he began running for president. As he does frequently while campaigning, the Republican vowed to veto any lawmakers pork barrel project that reaches his desk in the White House.
