Practice slow and be sure to get a metronome and the book by George Lawrence Stone "Stick Control." The cost of the book is $8.00. Try to do this daily! Play the tone by itself 10 minutes right hand Play the tone by itself 10 minutes left hand Sit or stand in front of one conga drum place a music stand with the "Stick Control" book right in front of you. Start with page five and play the exercise 1 to 12 at 40 bpm and then play 13 to 24 at 50 bpm. (You will need a metronome). Once complete, you can move on to the next tone. Lets talk a little more about valved brass instruments and how they work. As you know, this is a tuba, but could just as well be a trumpet, or a euphonium, or a french horn, or a flugelhorn. They all work on the same principles. Weve talked before about how the depression of one or more of the valves lowers the pitch; today we will talk specifically about by how much you can lower that pitch. So lets take a look at a piano keyboard. The distance between these two notes is known as a whole step, or a whole tone. And the distance between these two notes is called a half step, or a half tone. Now whats the difference? This is the whole tone; you see that theres an extra key between them. And heres the half tone; theres no extra key between them. Thats the difference. So this is a whole tone and this is a whole tone; but this is a half tone. This would also be a half tone; this would also be a half tone. Another example of a whole step would be here because you see there is a note between them. So heres a question for you Whats the distance between those two notes? Well, the answer is one, two, three. That distance, or that interval is three whole tones, and there is a name for that in western music Its called a "three-tone". But, of course, no one would say "three-tone", you have to say it in Greek its a "tritone". So, the distance between this note and this note is called a "tritone". (By the way, the half tone is the smallest interval in Western music. Now, when I say "western music", what am I talking about? Am I talking about "Country and Western Music"? No, in fact Im not. Im talking about European music or North American music. I am not talking about Indian music, or indigenous music to tribes of South America, or African music, or Japanese music. "Western music" is generally the term you use to refer to music written either in the classical tradition in Europe, or, for example, the music that you hear in Pop radio in America.) So, again half step, whole step. So lets take a look at a guitar to see these principles in action. If I play this note, and then this note, then we will have had a half tone. If we play this, its also a half tone. But if I play this and then this, that is a whole tone, because you see, that there is one fret here that I didnt use. So the same principle as on the piano. So, now how does that work on brass instruments? How does that work on my tuba here? If I want to lower a note by a half tone, I press the smallest valve the "baby". If I want to lower it by a whole tone, I press the "daddy". If I want to lower it by one and a half, I press the "granddaddy". But, of course, if you think about it, you could also press the baby, which is a half step, and the daddy, which is a whole step, so one and a half. If I want two, I could press one and a half plus a half. If I want two and a half, I would press one and a half plus one. If I wanted three, I would press one and a half plus a half, plus one, which also adds up to three, and theres our tritone. So, the most that you can lower any given note on the tuba is by a tritone, which sounds like this. So, now you know a little bit more about how brass instruments work.

The divine Nektarios of Aegina, is one of the most widely known of Greek Orthodox Saints. He was born on October 1st, 1846 in Silyvria.His parents brought him up in a manner pleasing to God, and did what their very limited means allowed for his formal education. Having completed elementary school in his hometown, he left for the great city of Constantinople at the age of 14. There, he found employment as a shop assistant and was able to earn a meager living. As well as regularly attending the Divine Liturgy, he also read the Holy Scriptures and Writings of the Orthodox Elders of the Church on a daily basis. In 1866, at the age of 20, Anastasios went to the island of Chios, where he was appointed a teacher. After 7 years, he entered into the local monastery, under the care of the venerable elder Pachomios. After 3 years as a novice Athanasios was tonsured a Monk and given the name Lazarus. A year later, he was ordained a Deacon and received the name Nektarios. Elder Pachomios, and a wealthy local benefactor convinced the young monk to complete his high school studies in Athens. From there Deacon Nektarios went to Alexandria, where he was cared for by the Patriarch of Alexandria, Sophronios. The Patriarch insisted that Nektarios complete his Theological studies, and so in 1885 he graduated from the School of Theology in Athens. The Patriarch of Alexandria ordained Deacon Nektarios to the Priesthood in 1886. His great service to the Church, prolific writings and teachings, energy and zeal led Fr Nektarios to be ordained as the Metropolitan of Pentapolis in Egypt. As a Metropolitan he was greatly admired and loved by his flock for his virtue and purity of life. But this great admiration by the people aroused the envy of certain high officials, who plotted and succeeded in having the Blessed Metropolitan removed from office in 1890 - without a trial or any explanation whatsoever. He returned to Greece to become a monk and Preacher, to the great edification of the people. There the Blessed Metropolitan continued to write his now famous books. In 1904, our Saint founded a monastery for women in Aegina, the Holy Trinity Convent. Under his guidance the Convent flourished. In 1908, the Blessed Nektarios, at the age of 62, retired from the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School and withdrew to Holy Trinity Convent in Aegina. There, for the rest of his life as a true monk and ascetic. He served as a confessor and spiritual guide to the nuns and even priests from as far as Athens and Piraeus. His Holy and pious life shone forth like a guiding light to all near him. Many would come to him for healing. Saint Nektarios was a great wonder-worker even while alive. On September 20, 1920 one of the nuns took him to the local hospital, in spite of his protest. He was convulsing in pain from a long-standing ailment. He was admitted, and placed into a ward reserved for the poor and unwanted. There he stayed for two months among the sick and dying. At 10 30 in the evening of November 8th, although in the midst of terrible pains, in peace and at prayer he gave up his spirit unto God at the age of 74. As soon as the Saint gave up his Spirit, a nurse came to prepare him for transfer to Aegina for burial. As the nurse removed the Saints sweater, she inadvertently placed it on the next bed, on which a paralytic lay. And O, strange wonder!, the paralytic immediately began to regain his strength and arose from his bed healthy, and glorifying God. Some time after his repose, strangely a beautiful fragrance was emitted by his Holy body, filling the room. Many came to venerate his Holy relics prior to his burial. With amazement, people noted a fragrant fluid that drenched his hair and beard. Even after 5 months, when the nuns of the convent opened the Saints grave to build a marble tomb, they found the Saint intact in every respect and emitted a wonderful and heavenly fragrance. Similarly three years later, the Holy Relics were still whole and radiating the same heavenly fragrance. The Orthodox Church proclaimed him as a Saint on April 20, 1961. His Blessed memory is celebrated by the Church on November 9th. Thousands of miracles have been attributed to his intercession, particularly cases of cancer or other serious illnesses being cured. Mt. For the album the tone was achieved with a Plexi 1959 with extra preamp tube (mod #36) based on Tim Caswell original mod #39 done on a plexi tremolo. Look at SlashWorld to read about the amp saga. What Im trying to do here is to emulate the sound as it can be listened from AFD album, not the sound of slashs gear. I mean, Im trying to "reproduce" the sound recorded or captured and equalized for the album those days in 1987. Its a impossible and crazy task. I know, but its fun! Of course no one can reproduce the same conditions. Any recorded sound depends on many factors guitar, amp sound, sound engineer, studio, room, objects in the room, room temperature, air humidity, mic, guitar player style, etc, etc, etc... It is a hell of work to get these sounds out of my PODxt trought my fender combo speaker. It took me some months to find these tones and Im still working on it. Its said that Slash boosts his mid frequencies, but to find the tones youll hear on this video and on the next ones I need to work separately on low and high mids. His pickups are already mid deep boosters, but I dont have that, so, I needed to carefully hear and compensate what was coming out of my amp speaker. Even if I dont have a mid frequency beast Gibson Les Paul Replica built by Chris Derrig , nor Seymour Duncan A2P or Caswells modded Plexi, I could get very close with my Les Paul Standard 92, my PODxt and the fender combo speaker. Anyway, the basis of this is a Les Paul TONE + Marshal TONE. And I dont believe you can get that sound out of every Marshall or imitations, but probably from most Gibson Les Pauls and some humbucker guitars. This is based on that album tone, but sometimes it may sound like Guns n Roses MTV live at the Ritz NY in 88. I did parts of songs from the album, I apologize for my playing mistakes. In front of the amp louder I put better it sounds!!!

Another rare UK performance by the 2 Tone Collective, this was recorded at the old Coventry F.C at Highfield road on a chilly January evening. We played a 1 hour set for the fans before the kick off. At the start of the set there were 500 people present, by the end there were 20,000!. It features Roddy Radiation (Specials), Pauline Black (Selecter), Nick Welsh (Bad manners/Selecter), Ranking Roger (The Beat), Anthony Harty (Style Council/The Truth) and myself on Hammond Organ/Piano.

Wind in the Reeds; Moonrise on the Lagoons; Lake Louise. --------------------------------------- The British composer Maurice Besly (1888-1945) had an incredibly varied career - as composer, schoolteacher, organist, WW1 soldier, and latterly solicitor and dirctor of the Performing Rights Society. Besly published this set of ten pieces in 1926 - they were designed as studies - of moderate difficulty - in tone-colour and phrasing. I have selected three with watery associations.
