This giant bazaar in the heart of the Old Town has 4,000 shops under one roof and a maze of 65 alleys connecting them all into a vast and disorienting conglomeration. There is no need to offer directions for walking through the Bazaar, as it is a giant puzzle of covered lanes lined with little shops in which you can get delightfully lost. It is a small city unto itself that got started 500 years ago as a smaller market shortly after the conquest of 1453 by Sultan Mehmet II and kept expanding into the adjacent neighborhoods. More and more streets were covered with roofs to form a single massive building that reached its present size in 1701. Once you get used to the layout, you realize there is some order to the madness, with the streets forming a grid and with small plazas at main intersections. Shops of similar type tend to be clustered together inside the bazaar, so there are streets for carpets, jewelry, furniture, clothing and so on. Bargaining is mandatory here for no one expects to sell at the price first mentioned. You can even bargain in restaurants and everywhere money changes hand. However, before you get your hopes up too much, be advised it has become surprisingly upscale and glitzy, with fancy glass windows and too much gold jewelry. On the other hand, half the shops sell nothing but junk you wouldnt care about. The merchants are very friendly -- because they want your money! These salesmen are eager to catch your attention, so you will hear constant greetings as you walk along. Americans are seen as rich and gullible, unfamiliar with bargaining and true prices, so easy targets to fleece. Dont dress up when you go to the bazaar, because the merchant can determine your annual income with a glance at your clothes and jewelry, and will price his goods accordingly. Better prices can be found away from the main lanes. There is a great domed hall in the center called the Old Bedesten, which is part of the original structure and specializes in antiques and expensive jewelry. Nearly one-third of all the shops sell carpets, a favorite trophy for the intrepid traveler to bring home. You cant get ripped off too badly if you select a very small rug. The bazaar can get very crowded inside, so watch out for pickpockets, just as you have to do in any large city. One advantage of being here first thing in the morning is that you can avoid the big crowds that show up later. The bazaar, or "Covered Market," is a mandatory landmark and fun to see, but notice there are few locals shopping here because this is a tourist market. The surrounding streets actually offer a more authentic local experience. After you have had enough of the bazaar, be sure to take a walk through the streets nearby, which are also packed with shops and have a lively atmosphere. Book-lovers can stroll a block over from the bazaars southwest corner to the book stalls along Sahaflar Carsisi. An intellectual atmosphere pervades this long courtyard, with jumbled displays of second-hand books spilling out of the little shops onto sidewalk tables, and with tiny cafes tucked away. Istanbul University is just two blocks further, so you will undoubtedly see students milling about as well as many older characters. Notice the street vendors in front of the big Beyazidiye mosque at the end of this bibliophile alley, with cheap clothing strung over their arms -- especially denim pants for the students. You are in the middle of Beyazit Square, one of the liveliest places in the Old Town, with several nice sidewalk cafes and many people passing through.

13 Nisan 1914 yılında İstanbul�da doğan Orhan Veli, 1932 yılında Ankara Gazi Lisesi�ni bitirdi. Daha sonra 1935de İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Felsefe Bölümü�ndeki öğrenimini yarıda bıraktı, Ankara�ya giderek PTT Umum Müdürlüğü�nde çalıştı (1936-1942), Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı Tercüme Bürosu�na memur oldu (1945), oradan ayrılınca (1947) Yaprak Dergisini çıkardı (1 Ocak 1949�dan 15 Haziran 1950�ye kadar 28 sayı çıktı, Son Yaprak adlı özel bir sayı ölümü üzerine arkadaşları tarafından çıkarıldı). 14 Kasım 1950 tarihinde beyin kanamasından öldü ve Rumelihisarı Mezarlığına gömüldü. Kişiliğini belli eden ilk şiirlerini arkadaşları Oktay Rıfat ve Melih Cevdet�le birlikte Varlık Dergisinde yayımlamaya başladı, büyük bir ilgi gördü; sağlığında kendinden çok bahsettiren şair oldu. Şiiri bir takım kalıp ve klişelerden, şairanelikten, yıpranmış benzetmelerden kurtararak, daha kısa daha basit bir şekle soktu; yalın bir halk dili kullandı, gündelik sözlerle zaman zaman, büyük yergi ve espriden faydalanarak, gündelik yaşantılar üzerine yazdı...

Todorova worked as a soloist at the State Dance and Music Ensemble in Varna and the "Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria" Choir where she performed authentic Bulgarian folk songs, and compositions in Yiddish and Sanskrit. In 2003 Elitsa Todorova began working with Bulgarias most popular and renowned drummer and percussionist Stoyan Yankoulov. The unique Elitsa Todorova-Stoyan Yankoulov Duo turned into a phenomenon in no time. Their high professionalism and perfectionism underlies all their performances. Elitsa Todorova develops a percussions-playing style of her own, combining quick ostinate rhythms on the tarambuka with synhronized tarambuka with synchronized playing and singing. The result is a mosaic of unique vocal movements and impeccable musical improvisations. She plays traditional percussion instruments in a most non-traditional way. The singer easily mixes traditional folklore with jazz, drum and base, ethno-motifs, classics and spontaneous improvisation. The result is fascinating. A magnetic voice and percussion tell us their folklore-jazz story. The Four Lads were experts at close harmony and a capella and were very much influenced by Negro spirituals and gospel music. They scored a number of pop Top 100 hits during the early 50s, including "The Mockingbird," "Skokian" (1954), "Moments to Remember" (1955), and "No, Not Much!" and "Standing on the Corner" (both in 1956). Their initial break came while backing Johnny Ray on his early-50s hits "Cry" and "The Little White Cloud That Cried" for Columbia Records. The Four Lads launched their professional career in 1950, singing in local clubs around Toronto, Canada. All of the original members had been choirboys. Lead vocalist Bernie Toorish, (born John Bernard Toorish on March 2, 1931) had grown up in a musical family and began performing from the age of three. In elementary school, he studied violin and as an eighth grader at St. Michael Choir School, greatly impressed by the Golden Gate Quartet, he had already been performing gospel and church music with a group called the Jordanaires (not the backing vocalists for Elvis Presley). (Later, two of the singers later helped form the Crew Cuts.) In addition to Toorish, the group included James Arnold (first tenor), Connie Codarini (bass), and Frank Busseri (baritone). The Jordanaires later changed their name to the Four Dukes and they began performing to critical and public acclaim in the northeastern U.S. and Canada. An audition was soon arranged for the group at Le Ruban Bleu, a swanky New York City supper club, but they were made aware that there was already a group using the name Four Dukes working out of Detroit, so Julius Monk, impresario at the club, suggested they call themselves the Four Lads. Their engagement at Le Ruban Bleu lasted 30 weeks. In 1951, they were signed by Mitch Miller to Columbia Records as background singers. Toorish was later commissioned to do the vocal and instrumental arranging on a Johnnie Ray single "Cry" b/w "The Little White Cloud That Cried." Both sides proved to be huge hits and sales ultimately exceeded five million copies. The success brought Toorish and his Four Lads a recording contract with Columbia and the Lads began to lean away from spirituals and more towards pop. In 1952, Columbia released their first hit, "The Mockingbird" (on their Okeh imprint). They received their first gold record in 1953 for "Istanbul," but the hits kept coming. In total, the Four Lads recorded 73 sides for Columbia, including "Rain, Rain, Rain," "Turn Back," "My Little Angel," "Skokian," "Moments to Remember" (which reached number two on the pop charts in 1955), "No, Not Much!" (written by the songwriting team of Bob Allen and Al Stillman, who wrote Johnny Mathis big hit "Chances Are"), and "Standing on the Corner.." Their sound was polished, crisp, with an overlay of vibrato on the long notes. Many of their heavily orchestrated songs were conducted by Frank DeVol or Ray Ellis. The group also recorded several long-playing albums, including 1962s Dixieland Doins, which was a Kapp recording released on the London label in stereo. Incidentally, their version of an old Negro spiritual, "Dem Bones," from this album was used during an episode of the British TV series The Prisoner. They made their American TV debut on The Ransom Sherman Show on NBC. Other TV appearances included The Pat Boone-Chevy Showroom on ABC and Perry Presents on NBC in 1959. The Four Lads were also one of the guest hosts of the summer music series Upbeat on CBS in 1955. Their success story includes the sale of some 50 million singles and albums to date. During their heyday, the Lads fan clubs reportedly had as many as 150,000 members (in Pittsburgh alone there were 20,000), but their popularity, which peaked in 1957, began to decline as the pendulum swung to folk music and rock & roll. After a number of changes in personnel, the original group finally broke up in 1977. In 1978, Toorish gave up music and became an insurance underwriter, a job he continues to hold today. However, he didnt stay away from the stage mic for long. After the Four Lads induction into the Canadian Juno Awards Hall of Fame in Toronto in 1984, enough interest was sparked in the group that Toorish (now shortened to "Torish") decided to end his long hiatus. He reactivated the quartet, though he remains the sole original from the 50s lineup. The Four Lads continue to perform at supper clubs, on cruises, and wherever oldies groups are booked. They even have their own website -thefourlads. Copies of their first-release LPs are extremely rare and a virgin copy of their 1960s album currently sells for more than 200 dollars. ~ Bryan Thomas, All Music Guide
